I don't know about this new series (and I'm sure Alan Moore, the writer of the original graphic novel, is probably rolling his eyes at the very prospect), but Watchmen was a scathing critique of the Cold War, as well as featuring "heroes" that were pretty much the exact opposite.
Overall, it's a very good deconstruction of the superhero genre with some interesting political criticism.

Alan Moore is a pussy... He wrote comics about already existing characters like Superman and Batman and gave them his own twist, and now he gets all butt hurt when others do the same with his characters... Fucking drama queen...
