There's also a surprising amount of people (I saw the Reddit thread too) who say Mazda was in the wrong for either passing the car in front or not slowing down at the second crossing.

The first thing just seems silly and as for the second one, I don't really know how it works in Canada, but here in the Netherlands, bike lanes are the domain of the bike. If you cross one as a car driver, you're the guest vehicle there and it's 100% up to the car driver to make sure he's not hitting any bicycles, no matter how fast they go.

The laws here make it illegal to block a roadway, sidewalk, or bike lane with your car. The only exception would be to make room and stop for an emergency vehicle.

I crossed through the space in front of the car because it was the closest route from the bike lane. I am not required to cross into pedestrian space because a car is creating an illegal obstruction. I have to constantly ride into live traffic because people stop/park on top of bike lanes in no standing zones.

I was coasting and slowing down at the second crossing. Witnesses said I was riding at a normal speed when I approached the crossing.

The trail I was on gives full right-of-way to pedestrians and cyclists at every crossing.

I was 0% at fault as corroborated by video, witnesses, and police.

It was an accident... The real story here is Mazda's overreaction. Freaks out on the guy, threatens him with jail, goes to the media...

Clearly in the first part of the video the dick should have inched his car forward. Driver was a prick. Should have smashed his face in with a bike lock.

From the video I can't see any intention by the driver, either. He gave way to incoming traffic, then to dog-lady, then to the 2 bikers and then he hidn't look to his left.
It was an accident with the guilt on him not having looked left.
He didn't stop immediately, though. So, that might indicate some kind of attempted hit and run. But with nowhere to run.

Is that the parking lot of a mall?

Maybe the city should think about setting up traffic lights at the intersection. From the video it looks like a traffic- situation where exactly that type of accident could happen quite frequently.

Captain Mazda wrote:He was charged with failure to remain and failure to yield, nothing related to vehicular assault or intent to injure. When the police went to his home, he claimed he was looking for a parking spot, yet the video shows him leaving an empty lot and then turning into a gated entrance for a private club--which he has no access to. He then turns around and drives off in the direction he came from....
Ahh, no mall but the private club.

Still, that parking lot where it happened looked relatively large and packed. So, I assume there is some traffic at that intersection wich makes it somewhat convoluted and might lead to frequent incidents just like the one shown. Hence, traffic lights.

Good on you for blurring him in edit.
Having watched the ending a third time, I'd come to the conclusion it was definitely a hit and run. Did you cut some footage of the aftermath from the video?

So, he was charged within 36 hours after that incident? That's very efficient, I would say.

Hey Mazda, important question here...

Did he scratch the foot-long Mazda Amiyar & Swedish flag decal you have on the side of your car?
