Smithsonian have some free scan data of iconic objects.

Post by phantasmagoria »

Smithsonian are in the process of releasing scan data of iconic collection objects for free. This is a REALLY exciting development, I hope other institutions take their lead.

The scans are available as .obj data and there's an embedded viewer on the site.

The viewer on their site is pretty cool. You can change quite a few aspects of the rendering, including the texturing mode, specularity and lighting properties.

To celebrate the Apollo anniversary they've got some scandata of an Apollo 11 module up grabs.

You can look at them on the viewer on the website and download some shitty decimated versions for 3D printing but the thing that interests me is the super high res raw scan data they've made available. I've compiled this 16M poly version of the exterior and it's fascinating. Moving onto the heat shield next and then the interior.

Wish we'd had this resource when I worked on Gravity.

Cool. Someone import these in Unity and make Kerbal Space Program parts out of it :)
