BBC Launches new video download service

Post by Foo »

Called 'iMP':

http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/askbruce/a ... mp_1.shtml

Allows you to download and watch shows for up to 7 days after they've aired.

Not exactly free beer, but pretty close. DRM is a load of shit, but if this is being handed out for 'free' (I know, license fees), then I think I can tolerate a bit of restrictage.

All well and good, but surely this is also a disguised attempt to lump home computers in with TVs as receivers of broadcasted images, thus bringing them under the TV licensing laws?

I'm not one of them, but I know of people out there who don't own a TV but DO own a PC. I'm guessing they're not gonna be happy about any potential computer tax...

Yeah, it was bandied around last time the licensing procedure came up for review.
