Adding new file types for XP to search in...?

Post by o'dium »

Anybody remember how to? You can edit someplace in the registry to allow Xp's shite search to search inside different types of file, for words.

I'm currently searching through Doom 3's .mtr files for a shader, but it wont let me just search through them all at once and see if a keyword is in there, instead i have to open each one up and find the word that way...

There is a way, anybody remember how to add new files for search to search through?

Win 98 did it so much better :(

There is... let me find it quickly...

edit:

Here's how:
hit F3 to start a search
click "Change Preferences"
click "With Indexing Service" - don't worry you don't have to turn it on
click "Change Indexing Service Settings..."
show the left window pane when the service window pops up
right-click properties on "Indexing Service on Local machine"
enable "Index files with unknown extensions"

This completely disables the list you are talking about editing, and let's you search for all files. Indexing services does NOT need to be running.
