R.I.P. Prince
To be honest I never cottoned on to your music but 57 is way too young to leave this planet.

Why all the meh?
You didn't have to think he was super amazing to appreciate how much of an influence he had on music and how fucking awesome he was.
A mate of mine went to one of his gigs and said he sat at the piano and played the first line of music from every single one of his songs that had been released up until that time. In album and track order. I don't know why that suck with me, but I thought it was impressive and I still do.

Haters gonna hate Donny
Re: The guy with no name, wonder what they'll put on his tombsto
what's more impressive is that there was a shit ton of stuff he *didn't* release and somehow he kept track of that tooDon Carlos wrote:Why all the meh?

He really was a great artist and all, but I don't have the same connection with his music that I have with other artists.Don Carlos wrote:Why all the meh?
But I've listened to Bowie's last album over 30 times, and Blackstar still gets me choked up sometimes.

I'm pretty sure everyone here would agree david bowie was a much bigger and more inspiring star. I think what people are trying to say is that going out of your way to show others you don't like someone else, unprompted, in bad taste, is a bit douchey. Like a hipster listening to an 8 track. No one gives a shit.
Re: The guy with no name, wonder what they'll put on his tombsto
I just remembered that the first record ever got was the Batman soundtrack on vinyl. It had a cut-out; a concept I couldn't fathom at the time.
Didn't care much for music back then, and my parents probably just thought I'd like something with the Batman logo on it.

First of all, when did I say I didn't like Prince? Secondly, the whole point of these RIP threads is to voice our opinions about the passing of some popular figure, so it's hardly unprompted. In fact, it ironically sparked a discussion. And lastly, who the fuck cares if something is said in bad taste at Quake3World?
I think you're the only one getting butthurt about my "meh" post, and you're the only one who thinks it was douchey. I love it when people go out of their way to tell me they don't give a shit about my posts. You really don't get this message board thing, do you? Give it another 9 years, you'll figure it out eventually.

Re: The guy with no name, wonder what they'll put on his tombsto
I'm old, so back in another life when I was in a band, we played a lot of his music. We actually opened a local concert for one of his lesser known protege bands, Mazarati. He's one of my favorites and I love a lot of his tunes. However, just like other artists who produce a lot of material, there are lots of his tunes that I'm kind of meh on too.
As a musician, I would agree with Clapton that he was one of the greatest guitarists ever, especially on rhythm guitar. I only saw him in concert once, but it was a great show... expected him to keep playing into his 90's, so I thought I'd catch him again... should've known
