RIP Xbox 360

Post by Eraser »

10 years and five months after its original launch, Microsoft has discontinued production of the Xbox 360.

Writing in a blog post published this afternoon, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the console would now only be available to buy until current stocks run out.

"Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft," Spencer wrote. "And while we've had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us.

"Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. We will continue to sell existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles, with availability varying by country."

That said, Microsoft will support the console for the foreseeable future - Xbox Live, Deals with Gold, Games with Gold and the console's online store will continue uninterrupted.

Any Xbox 360 hardware issues will also still be supported via Xbox.com.

Excellent, now I'll be able to charge a premium for fixing them.

So why can you only now start charging a premium seeing as the situation hasn't changed ?

And isn't above deceiving his customers, apparently.

I'm not deceiving anyone since I tell them the price up front. Lots of people fix them and prices range from 30 - 60$ depending on what's broken.

Aside from that, there's a lot of crap M$ did with the 360 that prevents someone like me from easily fixing a problem and over time, parts are going to become scarce, possibly used sales might even cost more etc... I also think 60$ is more worth my time these days...
