recent car shows
Finally getting back into the car scene over the last year. Going to shows I am noticing bling is winning over engine mods and pure power. When did this happen? I find it pretty ridiculous up that a lower trim model with rattle can plasti dip paint job and some Carbon fiber like vinyl yields higher scores the dropping a CAM and supercharger into the top trim of the same model car.
My car has been in quite a few non judged meets and cruises, I've been lurking shows to see where to put my cash and I'm having a hard time with this. In the real world dropping a supercharger or turbo into a car has no effect on daily driving. The only satisfaction you get is from shows and the track. Due to the cost of track insurance (and repairs) I will be going to a heck of a lot more shows than I will be racing, plus some of the show prizes and sponsors can yield some good cash and parts.
Leaves me wondering...
2 Rattle cans and some bling $80.00
Stage 1, 2 and 3 SP kit and supercharger $16K

Base is a 2015 Challenger Scat Pack 6.4L 392 that pushes 485HP. By itself she's a monster and sounds great, completely blacked out it looks great as well.losCHUNK wrote:What do you want more ?, flippy doors or whhhiiRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Been waiting patiently for Kenne Bell to drop their supercharger, they are claiming to be able to put 901HP to the wheels alternately Magnuson is available now and has a warranty.... For this mod I would get a professional install.
I would like to lower the car 0.75 more, but I'm already scraping a lot so it may not be an option if I want to keep enjoying the car. Putting air suspension on the car would give me the look I am going for and the ability to lift the car when needed for parking, but the performance would suffer so it's back to looks -vs- performance. Stance wins the shows since you are not taking the judges for a rip on a track...
After the supercharger some minor exhaust work if needed. From the factory it has an active exhaust, which can be adjusted when in track mode. I enjoy driving in track mode as it opens the exhaust about 40% one of the tuners is working on 100% open tune. Having control of the exhaust is a great feature, I can quiet it down from insane to just obnoxious when driving near my house at night.

901bhp?!
I've gone out of my way to keep my car stock (it's worth way more as it's a rare car). I think that was a very wise choice as it must be costing you a fortune!

Re: recent car shows
Nice !
TBH I'd normally say go for performance mods but if you're planning on doing a lot of shows and not so much racing then it's prolly best to go for air suspension as you won't be winning anything on stilts and you can't live with the car otherwise
Just having a track day set up is not an option ?

Cost up front yes, but the fun of building, owning, showing and racing will soften the blow an it will hold value and hopefully be easy to sell for a profit once complete. How hard could it be especially if I can get it to 901 HP....
Thank you!Κracus wrote:Car sounds amazing dude.

Re: recent car shows
I'm not too much into cars anymore, but I'd definitely go for pure performance mods. I think that your car will look great with a "form follows function" approach.
How much is that 901 whp kit? It's just a supercharger or built internals, too? 6.4L V8 is a big engine to start, but it seems like a crazy horsepower increase from just a supercharger considering it comes with warranty.
I know it's not the same kind of car/engine at all, but just for the sake of price/hp comparison let's take a look at the following.
A high-quality 1000hp GT-R upgrade kit by AMS costs at least $61,500 USD because it comes with a new engine. The 800hp kit is $24,000 USD.
I was just curious if it's a LOT cheaper to get a turnkey kit for a domestic muscle car for the same HP.

Does sound like a fun project. I'd love to be able to have the time to do something like that, but I think it's best I just don't think about itGiraffe }{unter wrote:Cost up front yes, but the fun of building, owning, showing and racing will soften the blow an it will hold value and hopefully be easy to sell for a profit once complete. http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/press-cen ... xt-decade/ - nowhere near as powerful as yours, but a 2l engine (~182hp), kerb weight of 1075kg and Sachs racing dampers = it goes around corners well. Only 347 left

Show vs go is definitely the truth...
My daily is an ole 2003 jetta TDI with 500'000km,the paint is in great shape black and shiney.
Did big brakes, full suspension work, rebuilt the engine with ARP hardware, bigger diesel pump, Injectors, head work, big turbo, fmic, etc to bring the power from 90hp/150tq to 180hp/350tq
Not a single care from the car scene.... Ha!
Makes one hell of a daily tho. =]

The pd90 ? to 180 ?, christ. They came with the 5 speed box too ?
I'm guessing a lot of the donor parts came from the 150 ?.
(iirc Jetta = Bora in the UK)

PD.... PD?!? lol, nope... It's a ole VP pump TDI, engine code ALH. =]
And yup, the Bora = jetta, we just didn't get any of the awd options you guys did, anyway, I do have a few bits from the pd's.
The intake manifold is the PD130 8V, The turbo is a hybrid it uses the hotside and CHRA ( center section ) from the pd150 ( vnt17-vb ) but the cold side from some of the vans and etc over there ( vnt22xx ) that's on there doing 30psi.
The Nozzels are .216 5 hole varients of the 5cyl eurovan with special coatings and all of that jazz installed on the stock Injectors after a rebuild and shimmed to bring the pop pressure up 20bar primary and 60-70bar secondary iirc.
Running a single mass mk3 TDI flywheel with a Kevlar/ceramic/organic clutch with a 3500lb pressure plate ( heavy when compared to the 1700lb stock jobbie ) mated to the stock 5 speed 02j.
Uhhh, oh, the 11mm pump came off our automatic cars they used smaller Nozzels and bigger pumps so they wouldn't smoke at lower RPM higher load.
Then tuned mafless and with some deletes by me, good ole edc15 =]
Also, my inspiration ( I don't say ARP hardware is building anything )

Nice! you have a unique car with cash potential in the long run. My car is not rare, loses value daily and there is a ton of up badge-ing going on with it. The worst is are probably 10 fake hellcats for every real one sold... I'll be doing it for fun and hoping for a payoffPhoeniX wrote: http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/press-cen ... xt-decade/ - nowhere near as powerful as yours, but a 2l engine (~182hp), kerb weight of 1075kg and Sachs racing dampers = it goes around corners well. The more I add up how much the HP is going to cost the less exciting it gets. Not too sure as to how much 901HP will set me back as the Kenne Bell has not released yet, with that boost forged internals will be necessary, hours of labor, tune and testing... As for the engine the 6.4 is an amazing base engine. It would be nice to be one of the first few with this setup, but this thing is looking like a bunch of deliverable hype.ToxicBug wrote: How much is that 901 whp kit? The Magnuson supercharger is about $16k with all the internals but no where near 901hp.
...For now I'm enjoying her as the factory intended, terrorizing neighborhoods and the schools with my exhaust as I drop off and pick up the kids.

Sounds good though dude, don't know much about the ALH design but at 400k it sounds solid

Re: recent car shows
Honestly with that car I'd just get a nice bolt-on S/C kit from a well-reputed aftermarket company + cat-back if necessary and call it a day. I'm sure there are proven, reliable kits available that give you a decent HP increase without costing too much. Plus if you have the tools and skill, you can install it yourself.Giraffe }{unter wrote:The more I add up how much the HP is going to cost the less exciting it gets. I don't know the domestic aftermarket very well, but for imports there's AMS that makes top-quality parts for turbo imports. They're not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

The ALH is closly related to the ASV if that helps you out, but yeah the PD'S tend to wipe out the lobes with little or no issuelosCHUNK wrote:

Last summer I did a build for my dad, it's a 2005 Passat 2L 8v PD130, deleted the balance shaft assembly and installed the older oiling system, then imported a German TDI 5Speed transmission and swapped it in.
Pops loves it, and that ones mapped to 180hp/270ft lbs.
But yeah, my car sitting at 500'000km I wonder how long it'll go, especially now that it's doing so much more power.... Hummm, haha
Re: recent car shows
My project is nowhere near as grand as yours, but it will be fun and something to keep me occupied. Last year I bought an old '96 z28 for cheap and plan on restoring it over time. Not really worried about value or HP. May end up dropping an LS1 in it eventually. It has an LT1 in it now which runs just fine.
