Geebs or Saturn - a question about the sphenoid sinus

Post by tnf »

So, a friend had an MRI and it showed some sort of growth in the sphenoid sinus. The docs said that the way it 'lit up' made them think it wasn't a tumor. That being the case, do you have any idea what else could cause the development of mass in the sphenoid sinus? A lifetime buildup of snot and blood? He has a slightly deviated septum from a facial injury years ago (baseball bat to the face)...

They are planning to do a surgery to remove it in June - going up through the nose. Doc told him it was a every easy operation, but that there were risks due to the proximity of the optic nerve.

Any input is appreciated.

It's no big worry. I just told him I'd look into it. He's just a bit concerned about what this thing actually is...

Me neither, what symptoms did he have an MRI for in the first place?

If it doesn't look malignant on the MRI, then inflammatory tissue secondary to chronic infection or allergy is my best bet.... but I'm on pretty thin ice there.

Symptoms were severe neck pain.

I just heard that the ear, nose and throat specialist told him it might just be a building of 'crap' (not my words...). So, maybe this 'crap' is just inflammatory tissue and whatnot that has built up over the years.

I don't see how anyone could give a good diagnosis without looking at the MRI

NOT MY DREMMIL!
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

All I know is that he sphenoid is a common place for invasive meningioma. But if the docs said it's not, then I guess it isn't. Perhaps a cyst on the bone?
