I put the point on the table and you dodge it - nicely done!
I haven't dodged anything. It is you that is missing the point entirely.
When is the last time you saw the Prime Minister of Canada claim himself King....causing the Canadian populance to bear arms to "bring down the regime"?
You just made my point all the more poignant. The right to bear arms wasn't inserted for tough times when a powerful dictator takes charge and the obvious response is revolution. It's there to prevent things from becomming too cozy. People with the mind to do so will seize power when people are at their most comfortable - things are going well enough to pull it off. And I think you'd be surprised just how bright most of us are.
The only exposure you get to the American mind is what our massive media machine throws out for you to consume. Really - you don't know the first thing. You like percentages, take a look at the ones in our last national election. At least half of us (the ones that bothered to vote) are paying attention and are concerned about the state of things. Even still - so many people don't bother to vote, and just as many of them are just as pissed as the rest of us...

So again...with "At least half of you (the ones that bothered to vote) are paying attention and are concerned about the state of things" do you honestly believe that - today - it's possible in the US for a "squatting president"?
If it were, do you think you having the right to own a gun will change anything? What are you gonna do? Sit in your bedroom window and pick off the US patrols one by one?

No, I don't like percentages. It was simply a - obviously effective - troll.
As to my exposure to the "American mind" you have no clue what I know....so speculating here wouldn't be prudent.

About the "squatting president" thing - there'd be no better time than now - Bush is the leader of the party that for all intents and purposes runs the entire government. Like I said though, I doubt that outcome very much.

This is an interesting perspective if you want to understand why people are getting shot by cops who twitch the wrong way: What kind of person WANTS to be a cop when he/she is willing to accept the mindset that everybody hates them and wants to "bust a cap" on him?
Is it the militant type? The one who wants to be SWAT someday and - like that nutjob Francis from Stripes - someone who is full of testosterone and just wants to shoot somebody? How would a person with this personality deal with the thought that everybody hates them and wants them dead...as soon as I can get my gun out of the glove box.
Why would someone want to do a job that nobody wants?
And don't give me that "I want to make detective" crap.
Many people do undesireable work out of a sense of duty or a desire to gain respect. That's what I hear anyway - I'm a selfish bastard looking out for #1 :icon32:

And NASCAR.
NASCAR is supported by the hillbilly ethos proclaimed in country music. Bring an end to country music, and NASCAR falls too.
Country music is like water gushing from a mountain spring; stop it at its source and many bad bad things, such as guns, NASCAR, mullets, incest, cowboy hats, ignorance of Kyoto, southern accents, yellow ribbons, George Bush, unquestionable pride in one's country, and Walker Texax Ranger, will die off as their source of vitality turns into a dry hole in the green, mountain ground.
I just watched that other vid with the cops pummeling that SUV and I have one more comment on the multiples of rounds that seem to be fired during these incidents:
Is it the "mob rule" when the bullets start flying?
When the first person fires it usually initiates a barrage of fire from supporting members and it usually is "locational" suppression fire - no real target since they're just shooting because someone else need to shoot. They see where their partner is shooting and begin firing in that "general direction"...in this case being the driver's seat of the SUV or the engine block. And I doubt a 9mm round would do much damage to a moving vehicle with the weight of an SUV.
Seriously....how many cops that fired his weapon at the SUV actually saw a gun? They were told he was probably armed...which means he's evil and must be killed....but how many actually saw him with a weapon? How many simply kept firing until the SUV stopped moving? How many wanted to hootnholler YEEHAW! and continue shooting?
So why empty their weapons or - at the very least - add to the danger of richochet and public safety with their bullets? One cop in this incident was hit....probably from the cross fire.
If one police officer can shoot and disarm a suspect with one shot why do his cohorts think it's a good idea to fire at least one more round into centre mass?
It's all hilarious and pathetic when you think about it.
Boo.

in australia, police aren't allowed to point thier gun at someone unless the someone is immediately threatening them (verbally, or physically), and they're not allowed to fire at all unless someone is in danger of immediately threatening them (i.e. has a gun already drawn and aimed at them) in which case they are allowed to use non-lethal shots if possible to incapacitate the dude.
