People who played MGS V demo/pre-ordered V

Post by feedback »

I'm really fucking bad at it. Took me 18 retries to get through the demo. I still don't feel like I understand the mechanics. It's different from MGS 3 where you can take people out separately. Here it's like you have to either kill them or sneak by them throughout the whole mission, but it's never clear when you'll be seen or not. If you take out a few and then go through an area, by the time you go back through there are like 3x more troops and it's impossible to do via stealth. (referring to the rescue paz demo mission) Really frustrating.

Played Ground Zero and I didn't recognise the game in the slightest; felt almost like it was trying to hard to capture former glory....

- I didn't play the MGSV demo, but I did play MGSV: Ground Zeroes and liked it a lot. One reason I liked it so much is because the story was slim (or maybe just that there werent too many cut scenes.) When you say demo, feedback, are you referring to ground zeroes? In ground zeroes, there is definitely a finite number of guards so I'm not too sure what you are talking about. Perhaps my comment about the number of guards doesn't really address the point you are making. Any way, I hope you are enjoying the game.

- The Phantom Pain sounds great by the way. I saw a collection of reviews here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments ... ew_thread/

- As an aside, I think the MGS storyline is complete garbage. I understand that a lot of people love MGS because of the story though. I remember you posted some cool MGS3 links back in the day, feedback. Any way, MGS3 was by far the best MGS game. Other MGS games aren't even close IMO.

Yeah I'm talking about GZ, I have it as I've preordered The Phantom Pain. Basically I got stuck after picking up Paz and had no smoke nades left. Then you drive the truck out with paz in it but the game will randomly put soldiers in front of your vehicle sometimes which will get you detected unless you run them over/restart. So if you're trying to go non-lethal, you get this random bullshit that forces you to restart until you're lucky enough that the guards are in the right place.

Eh?
You know you can extract unconscious guards by taking them to helicopter evacuation points, right?
I've never driven Paz out in the truck, just carried her. Just made sure to clear the path first.

No, why would I know that? lol and how many extra hours does that take you to drag guards, call a heli, and have them taken away? :/ This is not a mechanic used before (nor one that even makes sense).

Do you play with a controller or a keyboard/mouse? I have both and both of them are awkward.

I did it first when rescuing Chico. I thought, "hey, I can lug these guys around! What happens if I lug them to the chopper?"
Then I scored points for doing so, so it became an obsession.
You can bet your ass I'll be Fultoning every goon I can get my hands on in Phantom Pain.

As for the controls, I've tried both controller and M&KB, and controller's definitely better.

The only thing I found constraining about GZ was how goals and achievements are so closely linked. I kinda wish achievement culture would disappear, as it can train the player to play in certain ways and not experiment. And there's obviously a lot of room for experimentation in a game like GZ.

that rolling mechanic is bullshit. i looked it up and read like 10 different explanations on it and still didn't understand. eventually i was able to do it, but i don't remember how any more--so i can't relay the information.

sorry, i know this post isn't helpful. just letting you know that i share your frustration.

it's a Kojima game. You probably have to face the controller north before it works. Innovative!

I played through 2 more of the side missions and I'm starting to understand the gameplay mechanics. The problem is the detection mechanics you're used to are only accurate 50% of the time. And the other 50% they notice you and you have to immediately manually start over.

I was playing Ground Zeroes all weekend while waiting for The Phantom Pain to launch.
When I got to Paz her coughing alerted a guard, they went into combat mode, and I just said fuck it, called in the chopper to the starting point of the mission, and sprinted all the way there while being shot at with Paz on my back. Mission success.

I'm finding the regenerating health to be making this game way too easy. I just pulled S rank on a mission in Phantom Pain last night when I simply grabbed a jeep, sped straight into enemy camp with everybody shooting at me, ducked around a couple corners and regened my health. Grabbed the prisoner, fultoned his ass through the roof, sprinted out, and dove off a cliff for S rank.

I miss rations and non-regenerating health.

I've been preferring the keyboard/mouse controls for combat but for navigation I have a controller on standby.

Using binoculars, sneaking around, and using the bionic arm (whistling for horse, knocking to draw attention) are a lot more comfortable on the controller (plus, rumble for that extra immersion). Moving through pages in iDroid and selecting equipped items is also a better experience with a controller.

Aiming is much better with a mouse though. Occasionally the controls get stuck and Snake gets on auto-run while the camera gets stuck looking at him from the left hand side. I have to aim the gun to get him to stop moving and wait out the loss of control. I haven't noticed this happening while using the controller though.

eeeh I don't really have an opinion on it. I loved MGS, liked MGS2, lost interest in MGS3.
Kojima's forced cookiness put me off 4, at least from what I heard of it. Also, the lore and story :dork:

I'm also deeply scarred from what happened to PT. :(

I got MGSV The Phantom Pain.

The opening hospital scene has completely put me off. This is not the game I wanted. I wanted a newer, more badass MGS 3 (less of the Kojima "cookiness" and a relatively simple story.)

Looks like I will have to skip most of the cut scenes as I did with MGS 4 (never finished that one come to think of it.)

been watching a bit of this game on twitch to see if worth getting

so far it's

>land in Afghanistan by heli
>ride around on horse
>sneak up on some dudes and beat the crap out of them
>find rough diamonds
> heli back to mothership
>rinse, repeat

must be more to it than this surely

MGS 3 is my second least favorite of the bunch. 2 was the worst imo. MGS 3 has you busy doing nothing in jungles most of the game crawling after rats, doing surgery on yourself, and trying to navigate the clusterfuck that is the environment. 3 was the only installment where I was actually relieved to have finished the game.

I knew what I was getting into with 5 having watched the trailer a while ago. If I hadn't, I would have been super disappointed at expecting a sexy spruced-up MGS 1.

The game opens up more from what I hear once you expand your base and get research going. There's an entire meta-game around collecting shit and hunting down animals to be fultoned back to your Mother Base Zoo.
The dynamic day/night and weather system is pretty interesting. I was sneaking into a base taking my time scoping it out and got up to go take a shit. Came back and the sun came up, guards changed shifts, and I was suddenly a lot more visible. The guards will learn about you as well as you play - keep headshotting people and they'll get a shipment of helmets, keep coming in during night and they'll start having a lot more flashlights, etc.

Apparently later getting stuff like rough diamonds isn't that important since the real money comes from sending your recruits out on combat missions.

I revisited Ground Zeroes last night to unlock more stuff through the save data in The Phantom Pain. I spent more time than I planned extracting every soldier out of the camp.
The last three soldiers being shipped off before getting Paz out:

Grabbed Paz and a handful of new soldiers spawned out of nowhere. Oh well.

Did the Hideo rescue mission to unlock him in The Phantom Pain to add to my intel team.

Still haven't been able to upload my save data because the damn servers have been offline for days now.

Having a ton of fun approaching missions in different ways. The most enjoyable so far has been sneaking in to blow up their base-to-base com network and then running around guns blazing to mow down the enemies.
I make sure to take out useful soldiers with non-lethal methods and fulton them. Skills, and any ranking above a B. Everybody else is eliminated.

Taking out the generator and taking down the lights in an outpost is pretty fun too during the night. Gives more opportunities to silently take out people from behind.
