EA decided to discontinue their whole Online Pass scheme. You can safely buy games second hand now.
Good on them.

Most likely because they've got something even worse to replace it. Either that, or because 2nd hand sales didn't go down nor did anyone ever buy an online pass.

None of our new EA titles will include that feature

Interestingly, Reseburg claims the decision is based on consumer feedback. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”
IOW, people complained and didn't buy the games, leading EA to realize that it was a poor business strategy that they couldn't use to nickel and dime the consumer any more.
