Isn't that a burner that will burn a picture of the label on the top of the DVD?

But it's not in colour is it? Why not just buy Printable DVDs, their the same price as normal ones (the Bulkpaq ones are any) and you can print onto them using ink-jet (you can get special printers to do it)

that looks pretty slick. i don't really need colour and all that. plus you would need a special printer.

Although you'd prolly be better off buying DVD's with no writing on the top.

from the quick look that i took you need lightscribe dvd's. all the major manufacturers make them and the price seems ok.
the only downside i saw was you have to flip the dvd over.

I have the BenQ one and it produces very nice DVD labels.
One other aspect is that the lightscribe printing aspect is
rather slow - roughly 30 min for a high quality picture on the label.

gee that's pretty pokey. how long does it take for simple text to be burned?

A small amount of text is fast - a few minutes. You can think of it as the total time burning is proportional roughly to the area burned. Text has relatively little area, especially small, say 12 point font text which is located close to the center.

Ink jet on discs have all the problems that ink jet on paper has.
I've got an external LS burner. While I am fairly annoyed with it for coastering every DL disc I've tried burning so far (7), the LS function is quite nice.
It's a gimmick though. Don't get a LS burner unless you had a specific need for something unique/different (like custom DVD authoring for $$$ or something).
