Epic vice president Mark Rein has gone on record to confirm that the Unreal Engine 4 is currently in development - and has been for the past two years.

Unreal 3 has already been licensed by a long list of developers working on games for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but according to reports, Rein has suggested that Unreal 4 will be used to create games for the following generation and won't appear in its finished form for the next three years or so.

Yeah read it earlier. I dont see why thats so bad.

UE3 already owns anything on the market and will do for a long time. Its visuals compared with rendering speed simply own anything else out there. UT2k7 is out Q1 next year, Gears Of War too, thats not so far away.

Its only natural that UE4 be in development. I just cant see it being that much of a jump over UE3, because there aisn't really anything new that could warrent such a jump.

there is always more that can be done.

now if theyd start developing games again instead of retail techdemo's of their engines it might be worth something :icon14:

UE3 supports many, many advanced things, remember. Aside from even better physics and ever higher detail worlds, i cant see what could be so amazing to warrent a new version as yet.

Remember, going from 3 to 4 is a big jump and will need some HUGE change.

So em kay jay, it seems like you believe id and epic are making tech demos not real games? So what would a real game look like to you?

Sincerely, your friend.

Why in the fuck would it be time to stop making Unreal games? They're making money, they have to be doing something right. You expect them to sacrifice name recognition to satisfy your warped dork sense of what it means to be creative and inovate?

My point is that we haven't even seen what the UE3 engine is capable off (not on our own PC's anyway) so why start blabbering about the UE4 engine already? Even with UE3 I had the feeling that, when it was first announced, Epic only announced it to show that they would be able to create more realistic graphics than Doom3 or Half-Life 2. In the tiny-lettered footnote it would mention a release date in 3 years, so to speak.

Now UE4 is announced and they're saying it's the biggest, baddest and most awesome thing ever! So all the fanboys will be crawling over it and saying "look at how ugly HL2 and D3 look, UE4 is where it's at". While it's a project that's still in development for 3, 4 years.

Another thing is that, if they start developing a whole new engine already, then there must be something significantly wrong with UE3 (yeah I admit, that's a pretty bold and most likely very, very incorrect statement). It's impossible to tell what hardware will be capable off in 3 or 4 years time. No one has the slightest clue as to what features graphics cards will have and, who knows, physics cards by that time? So why start from scratch when you'd probably be better off using UE3 as a basis and add features to that?

My point is that if UE3 is so great now then why isn't it scalable enough to still be great in three years from now? I mean, even the 6 year old Q3 engine is still being used for game development this very day, and see what they can push out of it.

It just seems to me that if Epic jumps so quickly to UE4, they don't show much faith in UE3's long-term use.

Note that I'm not talking about Unreal games but about the Unreal Engine.

Fucking hell eraser, he didn't even mention it in some massive press release, he just "mentioned it" for the hell of it.

Jump on Carmacks back why dont you? Doom 3 is less than a year out of the door but hes already writing the next engine AS WELL. Hes mentioned it far more times than just ONCE.

Fucking hell, if its not id software, bash it, right?

Jesus Eraser you must have been teased a lot in middle school to be so fucking uptight. Unreal is like a brand name for the company, probably more than the name Epic. Its been a profitable line of games for the company, and they put out a game not too long ago. They're not going to sit around with their thumbs up their butt cashing in on their old shit, they're going to start working on the next game!

Note again that I'm not talking about games or Unreal in particular here, just the tech powering the games, and I don't care for the name, just the fact that they're already taunting with UE4 while UE3 hasn't even hit the market.

well, they both keep rehashing the same game with more polygons, basically. although epic has a hand up over id; epic created some new gametypes for their franchise, and keeps changing (note that im not saying improving, per se) their presentation :)

Don't forget more content.

Seriously though, some other people here must have thought to themselves 'what I'd like to see is an id software which produces more games geared for online arena play, with tons of levels and game modes, extra content that comes out for free, and a good player base to go with it'. Oh yeah, Epic and Unreal Tournament. Gonna go play some onslaught.

Epic are the best company we've got going for what we really want right now, fast paced online arena games. id aren't creating that type of stuff right now, and Raven's next game isn't here yet. Unfortunately staying with the same game (Q3) for any longer isn't viable.. there aren't enough players and the gameplay has flattened out so as to become dull. I for one needed to move onto a new game about 18 months ago and when I checked out what was available, UT2004 made the most sense.

I mean in many eyes this probably makes me a fanboy, fair enough... but I find it almost unbelievable that someone would have such a fucked up view of the gaming world that they would berate a company announcing another new FPS engine. That's just fucking sad. It's a strange aspect of human nature that makes some people see everything in a negative light, even though they could see it in a positive one and have a really enjoyable time with their chosen hobby.

oh BTW Quake and Unreal Tournament aren't franchises. A franchise is where a company or government grants permission to another company to produce something in their name.

Quake 4 is a franchise, becuase Raven are working on it although it's an id software title.

Epic create their Unreal line of games in-house and as such it isn't a franchise.
