MS is having the X05 in Amsterdam right now, and they just revealed the price for its worldwide release. seems there will be two versions, the Core and the Ultimate Gaming XXXPerience omglol version:
Xbox360 'core' includes:
- Xbox 360 Controller
- Xbox 360 Faceplate
- Xbox 360 Standard AV Cable
for those who actually want everything MS promised, well they have to shell out a hundred more:
- Xbox 360 Hard Drive (20 GB)
-Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
- Xbox 360 Faceplate
- Xbox 360 Headset
- Xbox 360 Component HD-AV Cable
- Xbox Live Silver-lidmaatschap
- Bonus Media Remote
lol at this quote
"HD ERA is coming!"
*no HD cables in standard 360 'core' system
"Freedom from wires! Wireless controllers!"
*Wired controller in standard 360 'core' system
"Xbox Live Silver - Free live on weekends!"
*not included in standard 360 'core' system
"20 Gb hard drive!"
*not included in standard 360 'core' system
"Bacwards Compatability!...
...
...somewhat!"
*not included in standard 360 'core' system
Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Morgan Securities, wasn't as cheerful. He sees the $299 model as a "publicity stunt." "They're doing it to say they are launching at $299. The hardcore guys will absolutely not buy the $299 model...Only a complete idiot would buy the $299 model."

it uses lithium, and recharges using an usb cable which you can have plugged in while you play

Thats not good.
The biggest edge the 360 had over the PS3 was a built in harddrive that was as standard, meaning that game devs could use the harddrive in the same way the original xbox does (For extra memory, sorta vram).
However now, if there IS an option for it not to have one, then thats crazy, as devs wont be able to make use of the hard drive in the same ways.
I agree with Michael Pachter. I would never even dream about buying the bog standard dumbed down version, and do think that microsoft are trying to just say "hey look how cheap it is!".
Shame... Damn big shame...

prolly only for "x amount" of initial units tho.

No.
I can plug my DS and PSP in while playing so that the battery stays charged/charges up. Does that mean it needs a wire? No, it just means it CAN use a wire.

£250 for everything is a nice price. 300 is to much, 200 is to cheap.
IMO.

Personally I think that offering 2 versions will just confuse customers and drive them away.
Traditionally, console consumers have liked things kept as simple as possible.

They're offering a hobbled version that doesn't have any of the features they've been promising? That's retarded. Especially for the reason Odium pointed out - now developers can't make games that rely on all the new features, unless they make two versions; or piss off the customers who bought the cheap version.
Shit, new consoles have been coming out at around 300 bucks - for the features they've added, 400 doesn't seem like too much to ask. Why offer the shitty one? That messes up everything.

you didn't get a memory card as standard with the dreamcast - yet lots of games demanded you had one or you couldnt save your position - scale is smaller (in terms of cost) but the principle is exactly the same isn't it - if you wanted to play those games you bought the card - cant see a difference

Most parents will probably buy the stripped down version for their kids.
MS is probably not loosing as much money with the stripped down version.
Therefore I see why they would offer a stripped down version.

This is what I was told.. tad different. Speaking the harddrive is detachable (that wording seems to mean the average user could do it), I don't see the big deal.
Xbox 360 Core System - $299 (299 Euros, 209 GBP)
•Xbox 360 console
•Wired controller
•Detachable faceplate
•Xbox Live Silver membership
•Standard AV cables
Xbox 360 - $399 (399 Euros, 279 GBP)
•Xbox 360 console
•20GB detachable hard drive
•Wireless controller
•Wireless Xbox Live headset
•High-definition AV cables
•Ethernet cable
•Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (limited time)
•Detachable faceplate
•Xbox Live Silver membership
