Quake3World

When the game first came out I grabbed a torrent to see how it played on my system, and to see if it was worth the $50.00. I enjoyed the game, liked what you could do it in but I always seemed dissapointed in what I was playing for some reason. I played it until I found the Rocket Launcher, (not even in hell yet) and unistalled it, deleted the .iso, and never looked back.

This weekend I had a few extra pennys and saw the game was marked down to $20.00 and ROE was $20.00, so instead of buying socks and some boxers at Wal-Mart (my original plan) I picked up the game and expansion. Went home not expecting a whole lot, just "another" game in my mind...and I'm utterly loving this game now. The game can be as slow, or as fast as you need it to be (either you walk timidity into rooms with your tail between you legs, or you bust in spraying led in all out hell) and I've never been more pleased playing at 30fps @ 800x600. :icon32:

Before I bought it I never once watched a complete cut scene, or touched my PDA. So far I've read/listened to everything the game has to offer, trying to find all PDAs, secrets ect...Couldn't be more pleased, and suprised with this game.

Anyone else had this happen to them? Go into it the first time looking to deep into the game, and once you backed down a bit on all the different aspects of the game really enjoy it?

I do that with every game. Always give it the chance it deserves. I try not to go in with any preconceptions and try to get immersed. I enjoyed it rather well. I've played through it several times. In fact just started another round this weekend. In the middle of Hell right now. Also remember that sounds can indicate secret areas.

Doom 3 MP never took off. It was either the bad netcode, the 4 player snooze fest, or the high system requirements (well for MP it was even a bit higher than SP). Give to that there was no dedicated linux server for a long time and most servers ran really shitty because people ran them on home connection. In turn, D3 has less than 100 servers and less than 100 people playing at a time (that's prolly even stretching it, I haven't checked in a while).

If you buy it for MP, don't expect a lot of great things.

what i dont like about doom3 is that the enviroment is anything but diverse (save for hell). its always labs, corridors and more labs. and even if yoiu're not in a lab, it looks and feels exactly like the previous area (prolly a lab).
the original doom had such nice maps in there, none like the other.

I think it´s one of the strenghts of Doom3´s design that it really sticks to a theme and doesn´t try to impress everyone with o so many different settings just for the sake of it. Doom3 feels really coherent and builds up a unique athmosphere, and you need a consistant theme for this.

Also it actually is quite varied in the set theme. No part of the base looks like the other: Alpha Labs has that blue industrial style, Delta Labs is shiny steel and more modern, CPU has a quite stylish futuristic look, the Recycling levels are gritty and rusty, and so on.

That´s just not true. There are mining areas, communications and administration complexes, the whole gritty recycling complex, the settings along the monorail, warehouses...
