DVD recordable players

I'm trying to persuade my mum to get a DVD recordable to replace her VHS recorder. Does one DVD store loads more than the longest VHS cassette? Are DVD recorders reliable? Anything else worth knowing? There's a Liteon DVD recorder at argos for £129.99, it's the cheapest they have. My experience of Liteon has been excellent with my CDRW and CD recorder in my pc so I assume they'll be as good in the consumer DVD players?

My gut feeling is the technology needs to mature for a few years before I'll hassle my parents to upgrade their VCR.

some people still can't program their vcr's. dvd recorders i've messed with have fairly simple interfaces. none the worse than a vcr.
