the subtext of every attempt to using pricing to change behaviour is "only poor people do this". well-off folk won't have a problem with £7 a pint and rich people won't even notice. notice he doesn't mention raising the price of other spirits, wine for example - the drug of choice for the middle classes

This is getting stupid. With the average price of petrol at £5 a gallon and a pint at £7, and the minimum wage of what, £4.50 an hour how do they expect most people to live now?

I'm so fucking glad I only drink once every few months.

to be fair they are trying to do something about that with the legal requirement to provide what they call 'affordable housing' in every new home building project. a friend of mine on only £20k got a one-bed flat that way. it isn't a palace, but it's all hers.

tbh i don't know why they just don't go the whole hog and build affordable homes with taxes and sell them to poorer people. the mortgage could repay the treasury for tax expenditure and everyone wins

makes sense. itll encourage everyone to drink less, which is a good thing IMO.

ill just be buying a shedload more cans from the supermarket before i go out

What I'd suggest is that everyone should try working for the cops or, like me, Accident and Emergency for a bit, and deal with all of the pissed-up cunts on a friday night. The problem is that the English seem totally unable to have a quiet drink without becoming a bunch of nobs. It's annoying from my point of view because I have people who are actually ill to look after, it's annoying for the Police because, well, petty assault is a waste of their time. Extra annoyance is that rather than nannying all of these people, I'd much rather be off getting pissed myself

What they should do is make bitter cheaper and lager and spirits more expensive, so at least if people are getting pissed, they're doing it on proper beer.

If people could show a bit of moderation it'd be fine. If not, then fuck 'em.

using pricing as a means to combat knobbishness is an unfair method though, since it discriminates against poorer people. whatever is done should apply equally regardless of the content of someone's wallet
