Right, suppose i have this 3.5 hour long mp3, and i want to cut it up in different bits... how would i go about it?
I mean, is there some sort of little freeware program out there i could use...?

Man, that's one long legitimately purchased sample of music right there!

It's a live set, which makes it legal!
I think.

Audacity is what you need.

I wouldn't bother. If its 3.5 hours, I assume its mixed, so cutting it up will just leave gaps between tracks.
The better solution is to create a cuesheet with track markers. Assuming you use winamp to play your media, you can download mp3cue from inter-land. Foobar2000 has built-in cuesheet support.

Well yea, depends on the band mostly. Some of them don't mind people recording their shows.

well, i didn't mean for me really, but even for someone that doesn't care much about audio, some of these live bootlegs are laughable at best. i don't want to hear people talking/laughing/shouting over the music itself.

take a listen to some of these .mp3's from the
Bootleg Directory. a lot are complete garbage.

you burn some crappy cds then

and if you dont, something might be wrong with your player. my winamp changes tracks seamlessly.
itunes, however, does not, and leaves like 0.2 secs of silence between tracks. which is gay

I wasn't able to figure it out yesterday due to laziness, a football match on the telly and software non collaboration (Audacity crashed on me, though i liked the looks of the thing) but i'm gonna be stubborn and try again tonight.

Its a fault of MP3 as a codec, not my software or hardware. There is always a slight gap at the start of any MP3 track, and although winamp and a few others have gapless plugins which go someway to eliminating it, its still not perfect. If you have mixed albums as MP3 on your computer, its always best to use the MP3/CUE system instead. That way, you can burn them to CD without gaps, and have them play properly on your computer.

If you tried to play two MP3s seamlessly without using the fadein/fadeout trick, you'd get the famous Digital Audio Pop.

how odd. millions of years ago, when i was using a 2 speed cd burner on a mac, Toast would burn seamlessly just fine?
oh well. semen
