Half-Life Source -- doesn't work at all?

Back in November, I bought the Half-Life 2 package that included Half-Life Source, which is essentially the first HL game, only on the Source engine. In other words, better physics and a couple of neat graphical effects here and there.

When I preloaded it, the game would lock up while loading the title screen. I eventually got it working, though I forget how. It wasn't anything technical, it was just one of those weird chance occurances that you occasionally get with pcs. Anyway, because of lack of usefulness and reliability, I uninstalled it, and since that time I've probably reformatted two or three times.

I decided last night to try it again, so I downloaded Steam and downloaded the game again.

Well, the problem is still there. There is very little other information to include here, but this:

The first time I tried to launch the game, immediately after preloading/update, I made it to the "Loading" portion of the title screen, and the game froze. I couldn't ctrl alt delete it, so I had to just reset my computer.

After getting back in Windows, I tried launching it again. This time I can't even get to the title screen lockup, a message just comes up and says:

hl1\gameinfo.txt is not a valid format.

The other Source games also include a gameinfo.txt, and in those, it's just a bunch of information about the game, apparently in some kind of code or something. But HL Sources gameinfo.txt indeed isn't like that, it's just a bunch of squares. So yeah, it's not a valid format.

But I have no idea how to fix it. Nobody on Steam's forums seems to have any idea either. I'm clueless.

My system is of the type that can run DOOM 3 pretty well on High Detail, and as far as I can remember, I don't have this kind of problem with any other game, not even HL2/CS:S, etc. Any ideas?

All I know is I want it. If you get it to work, can you test if it plays HLDM demos? That would be awsome =)

tbh, you should skip HL source (which is just a simple port of HL -> source with little or no reworking) and wait for Black Mesa Source, which will be a proper remake

Yeah but... I already paid for this. I want it to work and I really don't understand why it doesn't. :/

Have you tried validating your files? That has helped me a few times.

Don't you understand? The other thing will be better!

Update:

I got the game working by validating/redownloading the files, however, now the weapon model doesn't show up in the hud. I have not altered my config in any way, so it's not like I have invisible weapons on or anything.

Weird problem. Deleting the config and revaildating the files didn't help either.

Source does something weird with configs. I think it puts the values in the registry or something. Why can't they just keep it simple like with the HL and Q3 engine (and mostly any other game engine I know of) so that when you delete all your configs everything reverts to the default values. Try the revert cmd in console. Might be lucky and it works though it doesn't revert everything for me.
