could be worse

show on last night of the top 10 worst towns in the UK

Blaenau Gwent was at 7

Like much of the Welsh valleys, beautiful scenery is intermixed with the legacy of its industrial and sometimes bleak past – among the area’s designated listed buildings are many old pits and furnaces, and even a cholera cemetery. Mediaeval Llanhilleth Castle sounds promising, but turns out to be little more than a Time Team-style “series of small walls”. However, there are two nature reserves in the area, including Silent Valley, officially a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The downside to all this countryside is that the area has little or nothing in the way of nightlife, unless your idea of fun is a rugby club drinking game. Anyone looking for something more classy faces a £30 taxi fare to Cardiff. To add to the less-than-cheery ambiance, it rains on average for more than three hours a day.

All in all, it may be peaceful, but we leave it for you to decide whether there’s any significance in the fact that Abertillery has an annual blues festival.

Good:
Peace and quiet
Sport well catered for, with four leisure centres and a regional indoor cricket school at Ebbw Vale.
Low property prices, with a number of Grade II listed buildings.
Bad:
The fact that there’s little to do in the evenings might explain the above-average car-crime figures. Or maybe they just don’t want to pay the taxi fare to Cardiff.
Unemployment and long-term illness is above average in the area.

Famous for:
The highest golf tee in the UK. Whether that’s because it’s on a hill, or just a really high tee, isn’t clear.

Infamous for:
The battle of Westgate Hotel, Newport, in which a Chartist uprising was brutally put down, leading to the death of more than 20 people and the execution or transportation to Tasmania of several more.
and merthyr was at 8 :smirk: which is the disability capital of britain

Blaenau Gwent = Total shithole, but its my shithole :icon32:

Forgot about that as well about West Mon Golf Course, walk all the way up a fucking mountain just to hit a ball back down, GG :icon27:

From what ive heard about the Aber blues festival, theres gonna be quite a lot of famous names from the industry there, but chances are the grungy spotty teen bands will be overtaking the show. Ill be there drunk anyway so I wont give a shit. You Newport laddies will have to come up and savour the 'Tillery flava!
