"Australian officials effectively banned the computer game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" and ordered it removed from stores Friday because it contains hidden sex scenes that can be viewed with a special Internet download.

The Office of Film and Literature Classification said in a statement it had outlawed sales of the game by stripping it of its official classification after learning of the explicit content"

They're taking it harder than the American government it would appear.

Is Oz a fairly religious country, compared to Europe I mean?

I still can't get over the incredible knee jerk reactions taking place around the world over a sex scene in a mature rated video game.

I'm sure, like almost all of your posts, that it would end up as an e/n

not really.
but having said that,
the liberal party who won the last election, gained the numbers in the upper and lower houses of parliment, but they only have the numbers in the senate (upper house) with the support of a christian right wing party, (Family First Party)
the liberal party is in it self is a strong right wing party.
the leader believes women should stay at home looking after the house and kids rather be out in the work force.

Keeping in mind I've never been to Europe, I wouldn't say that Australia was very religious -- we have a reputation of being very laid back, but there are always the tight-assed, ACA-watching concerned types that will pull games like this off the shelves because it's unacceptable for younger people (the issue, globally, is not the rating, but kids who are under the rating age who obtain these games).

You might notice though, our games and movies follow the same rating scale: G (general), PG (parental guidance reccommended), M (reccommended 15+), MA (15+ restricted), R (18+), which seems to be a little more lenient than america's system.

edit: might I also add, I was hoping Australia would be a little smarter on this issue than how the Americans were treating it :(

This is especially funny, as if 2/3 of the Internet didn't already consist of hardcore porn, easily available to anyone with an Internet connection.

I cant see what the big fuss is... As long a the games labled up with the correct age, who cares what it contains. Sure, in Oz its a little different because they have the A/O law and I agree they should stand by that if they wish. But for the rest of the world, this is crazy.

In UK, an 18 rated game is 18 rated because you cant be under 18 to play it. Its that simple. In america, its different, what is it ELSPA over there? So there will be a bit more confusion most of the time.

Why not make all american games carry the BBFC style ratings? Hard, "18" "15" "12" etc ratings, then you can just point at it and say you cant be under this, to play that, and if it scares them for life because momma bought 14 year old timmy an 18, its HER fault.

Over here in Britland, we dont give a shit. Its not like kids dont know what sex and violence is. Hell most of the shorties i know in the family tell me shit they did in GTASA because it doesn't interest me as much as GTA1-3 did :icon32:

I see Australia in a new light. Convenient stereotypes will now be applied more broadly.

Really it's a shame. GTA SA was such a innocent and pure game before all this.

can't believe i'm saying this, but odium's right.

it might well have been a similar story in the uk if the 18 certificate the game had already received didn't cover it.

the game getting re-certed in america seemed like it was because the content was different to what the certification people got to see. just because some pack of delusional assholes claimed it as a victory for the american taliban doesn't mean that it was.

the australian thing looks like they're just being bitches about it.

if either countries certification board had the common fucking sense to give it a decent cert in the first place, this wouldn't have happened.
