VANCOUVER -- Police have raided a business run by the head of the B.C. Marijuana Party in Vancouver -- and looks like the raid was ordered by the U.S.
Leader Marc Emery was not at the marijuana seed store when it was raided by police earlier today.
But police say he has been arrested in Halifax.
A store employee says police arrived with a search warrant shortly before 11 am.
The charges outlined in the warrant indicate it is on behalf of the American government.
Emery and two other people are accused of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, conspiracy to distribute seeds, and money laundering.
Words fail me...

Maybe they were selling them to people in the US where it's illegal?

it's "on behalf of the American govt." I assume that means US officials traced weed sales back to the store and tipped off canadian police. I see nothing wrong with it -- if yanks crossed the border and dragged someone back to the US or something it would be an outrage, but this ... meh.

why?
its not like we are talking personal use here. the DEA is talking over $3,000,000 worth of product being sent over the boarder by this guy.
if its true, he is no small fish.

why does it require US handling, though? Canada is perfectly able to judge its own citizens (except when the US border guards let them through despite their carrying bloodied chainsaws and assorted torture weapons). We got our high-profile murder case of the century (Bernardo vs OJ).
Although frankly, I don't really care. If the guy is such a huge time dealer and we know he's guilty, I won't really be bothered if the US sticks him in some death camp without a trial. When you start yanking citizens over the border for intelligence purposes, though, things will have gone too far and we'll have to unleash our trained polar bears.

the dea made a request, the rcmp is handling it. there is some agreement on the books that both sides signed off on years ago for stuff like this. Its not like U.S. agents rushed into Canada to get him.
My news is reporting (I live 20 min. from the boarder) that his seed bank does 75% of its business with the U.S. and that the seeds are being grown by 8-10 thousand people around Vancouver. B.C. bud is worth bout 3 billion a year and almost all of it comes through the Can/WA boarder. Hmm why do you thing the dea in Seattle got into the game?
sounds like the pablo escobar of the north to me. of course, innocent until proven guilty.

Fuck them, BC bud is good business for this province.
The mayor of Vancouver recently called for the legalizing and taxing (if I recall correctly) of marijuana. I'm tired of this bullshit, though. Vancouver has a bit of a drug problem and has some experience dealing with the problem. Some of the more controversial steps we've taken to curb drug use have been met with complaints south of the border.
I eagerly await the legalization of marijuana. No more grow-op criminal activity, no more wasted effort trying to reign them in. As well as the added bonus of frustrating the US to no end.

Wait. If what he's doing is OK by the canadian authorities while it's in Canada, and he's not personally carrying across the border himself, then shouldn't they be after the people who are moving it across the border?

I have no clue why we have to police the world, but it's true. Personally don't like it. But what can you do?
