Question about high definition TV

This is a random question - but in a conversation today someone brought up something I remember hearing - that the FCC (or some government body) passed some bill (or maybe recommended) that within a few years all TV will be high definition. Or maybe it was just digital...I can't remember. Does anyone happen to know if there is any truth to this - I know some dramatic change is on the way in the next few years here in the states, but I can't remember the details and haven't had much luck googling yet (although I've not given it a lot of effort).

In 2002 it was said that every single station was supposed to go HDTV by 2006, but it ain't gonna happen.

Yeah, they mandated that the transition be made, but as Mr. Driving Skills said, it's not gonna happen on schedule.

Wasn't it that they had to offer at least one HD channel by then?

They gave away the precious bandwidth for zero dollars, as far as I remember, to the existing broadcasters so they would start broadcasting in HD concurrently but I don't think they mandated them to.

Where do these idiots get their numbers?
That law was made in 1997.
Juggy, do you watch ABC15 in high definition? That channel used to be so ugly, but now that they switched it's like a gem.

from the FCC
Television stations serving all markets in the United States are airing digital television programming, although they still must provide analog programming until the target date set by Congress for the completion of the transition to DTV - December 31, 2006. That date may be extended, however, until most homes (85%) in an area are able to watch the DTV programming. At that point, broadcasting on the current (analog) channels will end and that spectrum will be put to other uses.
Until the transition to DTV is complete, television stations will continue broadcasting on both their digital and analog channels.
therefore, toxicthug is wrong.

I still don't have an HDTV terminal, since hacked Bell ExpressVU doesn't work anymore, I might get a HDTV cable reciever, but the fucker is still $300 (better than $600 2 years ago, but still). I watch HDTV rips in DivX on my HDTV thru component wires, and holy shit does it look good.
