Internal Clock all fuckered up

So, for the last 2 or three weeks, I've been staying up until somewhere between 6 and 7:30 AM, and sleeping until 4 in the afternoon. I hit the high point today; I was up until noon (20 hours of being awake) and then slept until just a few minutes ago, 6 PM. I expect I'll be up until about 2 or 3 PM tomorrow, and end up sleeping until 8 or 9 PM. Can someone explain how in the hell I can work for 20 hours on 4-5 hours of sleep, and how in the fuck someone could get so ass backwards in their sleep pattern; going to bed when everyone else is waking up makes it hard to be anything.

Looks like its time to look for another job. Unless ofcourse, you staying up is just recreational.

One school of thought is that your body clock naturally gains or loses an hour every 24 if not regulated by sleep, eating, exercise and/or light patterns.
not sure I subscribe, but I do fall into the same pattern as you if I just don't have anything to do.

Purely recreational, but my increased productivity at generally everything at night tells me a graveyard shift job is in my future.

As far as I know, the only real way to get back into the groove is to force yourself to stay awake/wake yourself up.
So if you're going to bed at 6 in the morning, just stay up the whole night and day go to sleep at 8pm. Unless, you have a way to force yourself to wake up at 8 am, if you only get 2 hours of sleep.
Youll probably sleep for a good 12 hours, and when you wake up at 8am the next day you should be fine.
Or if youre going to bed maybe around 4 am, force yourself to wake up at 8 am. have someone get you up if you need to. stay awake the whole day, go to sleep earlier at night (again like around 8 pm or so).

I feel the same way 4g3nt_Smith. During my last year of CS, the best code I ever produced came out around 3 a.m.
Currently, I have a job with no set hours. However, I will soon have a 9 to 5.

I'm running on the exact same schedule as you, smith. I woke up at 2pm yesterday and it is currently 8am. I'll prolly hit the sack within an hour, though. But I'll wake up, eat dinner for breakfast, and continue this shit for quite a while. Makes scheduling a dental appointment hard, as I sleep during their business hours...

You will actually be able to keep this up for a while depending on your health. When I was in my early 20's I held a full time job waking up at 6:30 am and working untill 5PM then DJing various bars from wednesday through sunday untill 3am. I also managed a rollerskating rink on the weekend days and sunday night.
I lived on 3 hours of sleep 5 nights a week and tried to catch up on weekends, but my doctor said that you cannot "Catch up"... he was right... After about 6 months of this schedule I found myself sleeping through my alarm and waking up in the evening thinking it was morning Getting dressed at 8PM on saturday night for my morning shift, I got all screwed up then I wound up with tonsilitus and was out of commisison for 2 weeks.
I re-arranged my schedule for health reasons

I begun doing the same thing, sitting here thinking "Damn, I'm going to go chill outside for a bit" then realizing thats it 3 in the morning. My plan is to pull a full-fledged all nighter, stay up until about 8 or 9 PM tomorrow, and then sleep like a little baby and hope I end up waking up at a decent time Sunday.
