Thought about the windows (or whatever OS) desktop:

I've never in my life had icons on my desktop, I usually keep the Recycle Bin and maybe 1 or 2 more tops...I hate that clutter feel of seeing a picture with shit all in front of it I guess. And know of a few others here that keep the desktop clean as mine so......

So what if you had a click and drag menu on your desktop, one where all you could see while closed is a grey verticle line off to the side of your screen. When you needed an icon just click and drag the window open (or some little button that opened it for you, a hotkey on your mouse or sommat), click you icon, and it closes when finished...

I hate dockable menus also...any OS already support this, any hack in windows someone has already done to achieve this? Sound good or just another dumb ass idea by yours truly?

I really don't follow what you're describing, could you draw it out?

Have you considered trying different shells?

Opens when you mouseover it or mouse over the taskbar.

auto closes, and you can toggle always on top.. never stays on top in games.. and can add and take away as many tabs as you want..

I coded something similar to this in Flash.

It was for music. The actionscript monitored my music folders for new additions, and when I would rip a CD, it was set up to display a 400x400 JPG of the album cover with others (Opacity 30% normal, 90% when hovered on.) When clicked, it would send the folder to Winamp.

It got in the way, so I don't run it any longer. The same script would work for any folder, command, or shortcut.

It sounds like a good idea to me. Some people can code well, others cant. Who knows how it might have been but i can garantee it took some time.

just curious as to how you did this in flash? i haven't got into any decent actionscript coding in a while, but when I last checked, flash applications (through pure actionscript) weren't able to access the harddrive at all outside thier own storage.
