Run Firefox Windows in Separate Processes?

I've been searching and can't find anything useful on this.

FF doesn't crash much for me, but when it does every window hangs and will no longer open links. When you have to kill one of them manually, it has to kill the one running process, which kills all windows. Sometimes you kill FF, but there's still a ghost process running in task manager that you have to kill before you can open it again.

Does anybody know if there is any way to run each FF window you open in a separate process/memory space?

Maxthon > Firefox

If for some reason it crashes, when you reopen maxthon itll prompt you "Hey you crashed, which of these do you want to reopen"

AFAIK it's not possable, they wrote it into the programming to prevent that. If you do successfully get to processes to open it will not work because your profile is in use and cannot be used by 2 instances.

Is your crash related to Quicktime?

For most of the crashes I've had, I suspected java applets to be the cause of the problem.

And I think it's fairly shitty design to code the browser where, if you have to load a profile when the browser starts, then the profile can't be shared by a separate browser process.

Part of the reason I like Firefox is the robust feeling of it -- being able to have 3 or 4 windows open, and 10-15 tabs open in each window.

It doesn't instill confidence that if I have a 5 meg PDF open in one window or tab (or a flawed/malicious java applet loads), then it is going to take everything with it that I have open, and possibly read secure data from other windows through the shared memory space.

I don't like the idea of closing every window and opening a single new one when I want to access my bank/paypal/subscription receipts, or any other sensitive pages. But that's what I do, because the security freak in me says that - however unlikely - it's possible for any java applet or site to read data from my other browser sessions.

yeah but the same goes for IE when it crashes, it kill all the IE windows that are open. I find it annoying to have to re-open all windoes/tabs after a crash, so maybe this extension will help you...

Session Saver

SessionSaver restores your browser -exactly- as you left it, every startup, every time. Not even a crash will phase it. Windows, tabs, even things you were typing -- they're all saved. Use the menu to add + remove sessions; right, shift, or middle-clicking will delete. "Simple mode" for peace of mind, or "Expert mode" for advanced flexibility. Just Click. Install. Rad.

Added TextSaver: everything you type, saved (even in frames). Added RemoteSync: session-syncing between browsers (syncs Adblock, too). Added intelligent postData-restore. Added various patches + bugfixes, per discussion in the official support thread.

Yea I've been running SessionSaver for a while. I like it, but it's not really a solution to crashing problems, since it would require you to predict your crashes and save the session right before it happens. Either that or habitually save sessions every few minutes. :p

And actually, IE doesn't crash the same way. If you spawn 10 windows from the same one (by linking, or by File->New Window), then every one of those windows will be killed when there is a bad applet or something.
But if you run them all as separate processes, they won't all crash together.

And BTW, can it run in separate processes?

Yeah since it's using IE core.

If it's running on the core IE system, isn't it vulnerable to all or most of the same problems IE is?

run it in 95 compatibility mode and shut the fuck up.

Technicly yes, but theres all the plugins to prevent it getting fucked up.. and honestly, it works really well..

Yes, but if you use spyware management tools like Spybot S & D you can import their hosts file, and 'immunize' (which adds a ton of sites to the restricted zone list). And Javacool's SpywareBlaster adds a ton more to the restricted list. The list is close to 5000 entries long, it prolly catches close to all the malicious activex installers and other shit the shady sites try to put on your system... Anyways I've been running Maxthon for close to 2 years now (and visit my share of pr0n sites :ninja: ) and never get infected with anything.

Why don't you run your mouth in 95 compatibility mode so no sounds come out of it?

I don't have any problems shutting it down -- I really like that part of it, especially with the SessionSaver.

But yea, starting it up takes for fucking ever.

I'll look into it, but TBH I'm still a little skeptical if it's running on the IE system. :smirk:

Well if you give Maxthon to a begginer user chances are they will get infected, but if you know what you're doing you should be clean.
