I wonder what the success rate for recent missions is... It seems like quite a few of them have ended in loss of contact from the vehicle.

With a cost of $330 million, Deep Impact is the eighth mission in NASA's Discovery Program, which supports low-budget science missions.
I guess low-budget is a relative term :D

The probe was 372 kilograms and hit the comet with 37,000 kilometers and hour. That has a lot of kinetic force :0
I was wondering if it wouldn't change the comet's trajectory, but then I read this quote:

"It was like mosquito hitting a 747. What we've found is that the mosquito didn't splat on the surface, it's actually gone through the windscreen."
