Saturn or Geebs - a quick question

So I know that this information could be easily found on the net, but what you find on things like WebMD and what you actually here from a doc are often different. So, being that I just had surgery and am going to be on the opiates for a bit - how long can I safely go without taking a shit? When I had my neck surgery, they really loaded me up with morphine and I think it was 2-3 days or something - at which point I finally broke down and used ex-lax (something, if you recall from the shit thread, I was forced to do again last Christmas at the in-laws). Anyhow, do docs normally recommend any type of laxative after surgery to deal with opiate induced constipation? At what point does not being able to shit actually go from being uncomfortable to being a medical emergency?
Thanks.
