Could anyone tell me what the normal temperature of a car should be while running?

All depends on the Thermostat. If it's a 180 Degree Thermostat then it will run at 180 Degrees.

I can't tell if it's past the red line, before I bought it from my friend, he put his own little gauge in there, which has no line. Just represents numbers and I'm not even sure if it's reading correctly.

Can't you go to a srap yard and rip out a 'propper' one? Maybe the only solution

It really depends on the engine. Smaller Engines run hotter and the specs say which thermostat to use. I have a V8 and it calls for a 180F themo. I think I put in a 175

I might need to replace my water pump, not sure. His little gauge read up to 230 at one point. Although the gauge doesn't say C or F. I'm assuming it's F.

You should check the thermostat first. Much cheaper and easier to replace than the water pump.

If the pump's bad, you'll usually see where water has leaked out of it and down the engine block.

If she starts getting hot crank up you heater in the car as high as it go's until it drops to releave some of that heat built up.

But I would check the thermostat and:

Neat tip I picked up.

Remove the thermostat and place it in a coffee mug of boiling water (roughly 180-200 degrees). If the thermostat fails to open, it is faulty. If it does open, your problem lies elsewhere. .

You can see if it opens by sticking your finger in the radiator once the temp gets up, if it's hot it is open, if it a normal temp ya need a new one...that's a lot of work just to find out of it opend. (at least on my old truck )

What marvelous irony. My car just started overheating today. For some reason the fans won't kick on, but I suspect the problem is more complicated than electrics. I can only drive it a few miles so I have to take it to some no-name garage on my way to work tomorrow. Damnit.

Will use the heater trick... Quite possibly is my thermostat, my friend that owned this car before me fucked with the current one, I remember him drilling a hole in the side of it....I don't recall if this is a good or bad thing. But anyway, if that's the problem then I'll just buy a new one.
