The artists are fine. They can do some wicked things. Its just the whole "lets make the strogg armour bright green" and shit that spoils it...

Nah, it's more the awful low poly models that you're tied to with the Doom3 engine. I've said it before, but outline is important in vision and no amount of normal mapping makes a low poly outline look good. In fact the more detail there is in the textures, the odder it looks

Yeah and no. Sometimes it CAN look good. But the problem with doom 3 polycount showed up in the imp more than anything else, and TBH, even though everybody EVER moaned about the imp having a silly looking head, they have done it to the berserker again (above in the only Q4 pic shown in this thread).
Doom 3 was all the right things executed wrong, but you cant blame id for that. They still believe in the old nintendo ways of 95' and are only just seeing its time to play catch up to what the user needs from a game (id's own words).
