I was forced into signing up to be trained in the use of these complicated things called computers and these even more crazy things called "USB DEVICES" such as pH meters, temperature probes, etc., etc., etc. Apparently, they have something called SOFTWARE that I need 3 days of training in to figure out how to make the data they gather into a pretty graph with labelled axes.

And remember, when you go to this type of shit, they have to base the training sessions on the assumption (the correct assumption for most of the people going) that you have NO COMPUTER SKILLS WHATSOEVER. I can't wait to hear someone asking "Ok..where's this "File" menu?"

3 days of this, then surgery on Thursday. Welcome to hell.

No.

And college professors are on a different pay scale than teachers. Depends on all sorts of factors anyhow. For example, a college professor in a big research oriented university who brings in big grant money can easily make 6 figures a year. A college professor at a small private school might not even make as much as a high school teacher.

As a high school teacher, the things that impact your salary are your education and experience. Every state has a base salary for a teacher who is coming out of college with only their bachelor's degree and no additional credits. For every 15 college credits beyond your degree, there is a pay increase. A teacher with a master's or a PhD, plus 90 additional college or graduate credits, will start out at over 10,000 a year more than a teacher with just a bachelor's (I was lucky, I had a masters and over 100 post-bachelor's credits when I started.) Then there are stipends, etc., for having additional degrees. I probably get about 5,000 a year in extra pay for things like coaching, being on various committees, etc.

I don't see how young teachers right out of college survive.

Enough. But I get paid for more than teaching. And I do contracted writing and editing on my own time.

that's a global truth.

was installing some software at a school with a totally fucked network a while back and one of their tech support contractors was there to 'help' me - found out from the headmaster that they were paying £250 per day to have this feckless, ass-picking, cognitive disaster area getting under my feet - not that they have any choice, IT contractors for schools have to come from county council approved lists, so schools aren't even able to shop around for a better deal if they want to.
