Celebrity Deathmatch: Cruise vs Lauer

During a bout of insomnia last night, I watched a bit of Keith Oberman's Countdown. He played a clip of a Today Show interview involving Matt Lauer and Tom Cruise. It was hilarious and sad at the same time. If you want to know if Tom Cruise has finally lost his mind (for profit), the interview supplys all the evidence you'll ever need.

snippets:

Lauer: Katie has mentioned that she is embracing, or at least exposing herself and opening herself up to, Scientology. At this stage in your life, could you be with someone who doesn't have an interest?

Cruise: You know, Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay.

...........................................

Cruise: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology.

And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.

Lauer: But Tom, if she said that this particular thing helped her feel better, whether it was the antidepressants or going to a counselor or psychiatrist, isn't that enough?

Cruise: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today, where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs. Do you know what Aderol is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?

Lauer: The difference is —

Cruise: No, no, Matt.

Lauer: This wasn't against her will, though.

Cruise: Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt —

Lauer: But this wasn't against her will.

Cruise: Matt, I'm asking you a question.

Lauer: I understand there's abuse of all of these things.

Cruise: No, you see. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.

Lauer: Aren't there examples, and might not Brooke Shields be an example, of someone who benefited from one of those drugs?

Cruise: All it does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That's what it does. That's all it does. You're not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.

.......................

Cruise: It's very — and you know what? You're here on the "Today" show.

Lauer: Right.

Cruise: And to talk about it in a way of saying, "Well, isn't it okay," and being reasonable about it when you don't know and I do, I think that you should be a little bit more responsible in knowing what it is.

Lauer: But —

Cruise: Because you communicate to people.

Lauer: But you're now telling me that your experiences with the people I know, which are zero, are more important than my experiences.

Cruise: What do you mean by that?

Lauer: You're telling me what's worked for people I know or hasn't worked for people I know. I'm telling you, I’ve lived with these people and they're better.

Cruise: So, you're advocating it.
My view: Cruise has either the worst publicist in the history of humankind, or he knows that the War of the Worlds is going to suck dog shit souffle at the box office.

Or he's just a crazy person. Like Travolta. I mean, they make good movies, but they're totally crazy!

He's making perfect sense to me. He's saying "I am a mega rich mega successful actor and I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks when I talk utter bollocks. Oh yeah, and I might be gay but I'm the one going to premiers with Katie Homes. So fuck you".

That's what I see anyway

Wouldn't you be nuts if you knew Lord Xenu was controlling Lauer's mind?

i read about this earlier today

This is unusual, and may mark a turn of events in mainstream awareness of scientology.

It is not everday where a celebrity scientologist actually publicly explicates some of the madness associated with their faith.

Events like these are going to get people actually questioning what underlies such comments - curiousity is piqued, editorials will start talking about narconon (the scientology front organization), and maybe once again scientology will be exposed for what it is.

And to make things better, Cruise, who sincerely believe in this shit, is going to dig himself deeper and deeper.

Yeah, I saw that footage on the TV, kind of weird when an actor is putting himself forward as an expert on the history of psychiatry???? Made himself look like a dumbass imho. If you are going to make statements like that you have to be ready to back it up with facts from research or something besides just "people I know", and " you don't know what I know".

Why would anyone spend time listening to what a diluded, fanatical actor has to say about anything?

LOl I saw that interview and it is hilarious when Cruise says "You don't know psychology; I do".

I'm sure Mr. Actor-Man has a degree in psychology.
Having said that, I think a lot of psychology is, in fact, bullshit.

Me too. But I'm guessing Tom's rationale isn't terribly well thought out.

jesus fucking christ

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_thetan
In Scientology doctrine, BODY THETANS or BTs are the ghosts of the victims of a genocide perpetrated 75 million years ago by Xenu. Having lost their individual identities, BTs are believed to attach themselves to and identify with humans, becoming part of their "reactive minds".

The portion of Scientology doctrine dealing with body thetans and the procedure to free oneself from their influence is introduced in the course OT III (Operating Thetan, Level 3 — the story of Xenu).
In Scientology doctrine, XENU is a galactic ruler who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth, stacked them around volcanoes, and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to cause people problems today.

the core of the scientology process is to exorcise these thetans.

You do this by hooking up to an e-meter, and a counselor (read: psychological terrorist) has a session with you, where you reveal some of your deepest darkest secrets (which are recorded, and used as blackmail if they need to keep you under control). When a thought causes the e-meter to respond (crudely indicating an emotional response), it is assumed that this is because the thetan is thriving on this part of your mind.

You then somehow deal with this thought, until thinking it no longer has a reaction. You are then exorcised of this thetan. At the end of each stage (the stages get more and more expensive as you progress), you are told that you are completely clear of the thetans, and that in order to progress to the next stage, and learn more secrets, you have to pay.

When you do so, you discover that there are actually more thetans that need exorcising.

The idea is that when you are completely clear of all these thetans, your inherent superpowers will be manifest (telekinesis, etc).

All this is only scratching the surface of the madness and evil that is scientology. Read up on Sea Org - the prison camp they have (not sure if it still exists)

That is one of the most bizarre stories I ever heard. I hope they don't serve koolaid, too. Wow. It kind of reminds me of those " the devil made me do it" religions. It takes all responsibility for your actions away from you and places it on some vague disembodied enigma.

I agree with you. Cruise got the first point of psychiatry being a psuedo-science correct. But he got the second point of scientology not being a psuedo-religion wrong.

Did you guys know that Cruise as a teenager was seriously planning to enter the priesthood. The guy had nomadic parents. I get the feeling that he thinks himself to be some sort of christ-figure.

I laughed when I read this:
Last week it was widely reported that when he was preparing to shoot Mission Impossible 3, due to start filming later this year, he tried — unsuccessfully — to convert his potential co-star Scarlett Johansson to Scientology.
Tom is becoming a nut case. His religious zealotry is getting to be as ugly as the plastic surgery done on Michael Jackson's face.

Goes to show Cruise is a fucking idiot and has no concept of psychiatry or it's methods. He says he's read books, I'd like to know which fucking ones. Possibly "An introduction to psychiahtuwhlkmashrufhufhrufhrufhrufhrufhrufmufufuf" by L. Ron Hubbard.

lol @ cruise

But the fact is that too much prescription is written out too fast for anti-depressants. Drugs like prozac are only effective in 30 percent of the cases.

p.s. Ritalin is no antidepressant

Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick. Please tell me I didn't just read that Tom Cruise said "There's no such thing as a chemical imbalance."

Just to re-iterate, L. Ron Hubbard created Scientology on a bar bet. Looks like he won.
