Got a copy from a buddy who beta tested Server 2K3 SP1 and got a free copy from MS. Is it worth my time? Looked, and the nForce drivers are in beta, anyone have any issues with them? I hear most games work, anyone running it and have some that don't?

Well here is NewEgg's Customer Reviews.

I'm just waiting to see if Longhorn is 64-bit supported, otherwise I'm sticking to standard XP Pro when I upgrade

ofcourse longhorn is 64 bit, why would they make a new OS @ 32bit ?

I don't doubt for a second it'll be 64-bit. I'd be stunned if it wasn't at least back-compatible to 32-bit though.

There will be a 32bit version too, they wanna sell as many copies as they can.

Yeah exactly, my guess would be both versions in one pack unless they're feeling greedy though.

Longhorn will come in a 32 and 64 bit version. The 64 bit version will still be able to run 32 bit applications given that you have an AMD64. Intel has yet to release a desktop based 64 bit chip that has 32 bit compatibility.

I tried 64 bit pro, but I had a really hard time getting some drivers for certain things like my sound card. It doe's boot a hell of a lot faster and seems a bit more speedy when getting around, but since it's beta and the drivers are so few and far between, I'd have to say leave it alone until it's out of beta.

IE 64 was pretty nice also, but had some bugs as well.

i didnt mean its 64bit only...

but i'm positive the main focus is on 64 bits and being 32 bit compatible..

Umm, its been out of beta for two or three weeks now, the copy I got is the release, which they gave to everyone who beta tested it or Server 2003 service pack 1. As for the drivers, all my stuff is covered, albeit the chipset by beta nVidia nForce drivers. My only concerns are apps like Nero, which add their own burning API, or other apps that add system-level files to do something.

Nah I thought you meant that, was just clarifying :)

I installed it on a friends computer a month or so ago (final version). Works well, drivers can be a bitch to find but if you're using well known products anyway then the drivers are already out.

That news to me... Microsoft sent me a stinking beta about 2 to 3 weeks ago.

What? Are you trying to say you cant run 32-bit Windows on an Intel 64-bit chip, or are you saying you can't run 32-bit Windows apps on Win64 running on Intel?

I should have worded my reply better. Its not so much that it can't run the apps: "Itanium systems can run 32-bit applications, but only through an emulation software layer, and at a lower level of performance than 64-bit software."

Supposedly they are extending the 32 bit Xeons to support 64 bit instructions but that still isn't really a desktop solution.

Itanium is dead or will be dead unless Intel decides to do something about in every category except maybe HPC. Intel has had a 64/32-bit capable chip similar to AMD's for awhile now. The only real difference being that AMD does some stuff in hardware that Intel does with software.
