I was just going over some of the stuff from WinHEC 2005 and I watched the videos of the Virtual Folder feature on winsupersite.com, and I was thinking: What's the point of regular folders anymore?

Here I am organizing all my music, spending all this time making sure it's all in the right place and easy to find, and in 16 months we'll be able to do it with a single click...

Also, that Aero interface... I knew it was transparent but I didn't know that everything behind the transparencies (Even video overlays, openGL, etc.) are blurred, on purpose, so you can see through the window interface, but not be confused with overlapping characters... You'll know what's on top because it's in focus. Cool.

Longhorn Media Player is purdy too.

Edit: They should remove "WINDOWS" from all their applications like, "WINDOWS Media Player," "WINDOWS Movie Maker," and so on. KISS.

Edit 2: APPARENTLY through the use of DX10 and Avalon if someone has a webcam you could display real 'reflections' in the interface... :icon28: :icon31: :icon31: :icon31:

That was the main reason I was looking forward to it.

Virtual Folders? If you just organize your shit properly you wouldn't need virtual folders...

Not to come off as a troll, but Finder in OS X now has smart folders, which will contain an shortcut (symbolic alias or something for anyone familiar with Linux/Unix) inside to every file with a certain characteristic (want a folder with every song on a connected drive/disk lasting 3:34? Done. Pics with a res of 1600x1200? Done.) OS X also has full transparency support, and many third party themes make use of it, although not as much as Longhorn, which looks like a massive gimmick to the point of inhibiting use. Also, iChat AV has support for 4-person webcam chats, and they have the real-time GUI reflection as well while doing it.

How is it worth going to a demonstration like that one if you have to put up with hours of that nasal-voiced whinging faggot talking at you like you're a six-year-old? Why would anyone ever show up?

I have iTunes set to automatically sort my mp3s. As long as my ID3 tags are right, it's all sorted absolutely perfectly.

iTunes Music > Arist Name > Album Name > Song Name with Track #

Oh, I wanted to mention Spotlight and full-text/metadata searches.

You don't understand... iChat AV has a little flipped 'reflection' below the video. I'm talking about pointless goofy reflections that just give the thing a huge wow factor. Here's an example:

Look at the Media Player. It's like a glass sphere. Since the entire GUI is tied into DirectX 3D effects now, it could grab video from the camera, wrap it around that sphere, drop the opacity, give it some shader effects to make the video warp and shimmer, and flip the image properly so it's like a reflection.

Why? Because people will have AMD Athlon64x2 5GHz CPUs just for Word, Solitaire, and Outlook. That's why.

If it all worked nicely wouldn't you let it run?

Edit: Not saying Microsoft is going to do this but anyone with Avalon knowledge could pull it off. From what I've seen, the MSDN nerds get these applications running in the same short time that it takes to plop out a Konfabulator app.

I'd rather organize things in folders all nice and neat anyway.

As if it wasn't bad enough that users can't keep track of where they store a simple word doc, you think having files all over hell is going to make life easier? Laff, maybe until the first time they need to switch to a new system or restore some lost data.

Managing your files is like managing your financies, it sucks but it's necessary to prevent loss. Like cleaning your house.

Eh... If you think about it, you can do this:

Partition 1: Exclusive to Longhorn
Partition 2: Files.

And have no folders at all on the second partition, just files. No worries.

First thing I'm gonna do after warezing Longhorn is disable the themes service and all that other bs, I'm gonna make it look like Win98, just like I have XP Pro running now.
