I'm getting this error sometimes when I type a command in the console...what's the deal?

Right click on the Quake III Arena folder and go to Properties, then un-check Read only.
Cunt.
btw, if it is...do the same to your q3config.cfg. One of the two is read only.

because that is written to the config no? Had that problem when I got my new pc and everything I would change my fov, gama, volume ect it would say that. Turns out the file was set to read only...

Such errors usually refer to "seta r_mode "4"" which is your in game resolution...maybe you installed another video card or new drivers so your old resolution is no longer available.
r_mode "4" is 800*600 by the way.

You most likely copyed it from a CD or somethign when you reinstalled..
your the one that didnt make sure that it was off, thus you are the "stoopid" one..

I never uninstalled q3 since I installed it in 1999..I'm not a man to be screwed with.
