Ten Four, calling all geeks. Graphics card question

I posted this in T&T nearly 6 minutes and still no reply. That place is dead. So I will post it here.
OK peeps.
I currently have a Geforce 5950 Ultra and I reckon it's time for an upgrade soon. I used to keep up with the latest technology for PC's but now I have no real idea of what is available.
I have seen mention of the new SLI cards but I don't think my motherboard can use them, because it's some new PCI slot, is that right? So basically what would be a good upgrade for a regular AGP port that's reasonably priced, I'd say around £300 ($550)?
Cheers Geekos.

Well if you wanted to be the biggest, badest el-geeko in town, you'd wait for the new line of graphics cards from nvidia, and upgrade your mobo to the latest pci-e/sli technology.
But if you wanted to upgrade now, your best bet is an AGP 6800 ultra.

I got a Sparkle 6600GT for only £150. I doubt the 6800 is £150 worth of improvement on that. Get a 6600 and save your cash for the 7 range coming along soon.
Oh, and play HL2 again when you upgrade with cranked up graphics. You'll really notice the difference from the 5900.

OK cool. So you think the 6600 will be a big difference. I have a 5950Ultra and not a standard 5900. Does that matter?

Just hold out pauly. The 7800 will arrive soon, and that'll ensure that 6800 prices should drop. No point upgrading a turd for a slightly shinier turd.

Good advice Brisk. Although I find the comment about my card being a turd rather insulting.

Well you
could wait for the 7800, but why stop there? Why not wait for the 8800 or the 9800 - and so on. Plus the 7800 will be above your £300 limit for a while after release so you'll be waiting a while. The 6600GT is a good mid-range card at a decent price, and will cover you for all current games, and it's much better than any GF5.
