So, come on then, spill it. How long does your XP logo stay on screen for?

I've noticed a strange trend...

Every since i had my first pc, its kinda changed. At first, my restart times would go down, and down. I went from a 233, to a 500, to a 1ghz, and my speeds went down. But from then on, my speeds never went down at all, and now it even feels like they may have gone "UP".

What kinda factors should i be looking for to increase boot time? ATM, i'm on a 3200 AMD 64bit cpu with 1024ddr ram, and my XP boot scren lasts for ever, about 12-15 seconds maybe off the top of my head. Not much better on a fresh format Its still ok for games, just restart.

So what are all your specs and restart times? No bullshit "2 seconds!" crap because, well, that will make me sad

AthlonXP 2600, and 15 seconds sounds about right to me. Perhaps a bit longer, but not much.

3200+@2.45, thats about a 3800+ more or less. gig of ocz, 800xtpe.

hella fast boot times. way less than 12-15 seconds. i'm not restarting just too find out though.

From powered off, it takes my system less than 10 seconds to come to the logon prompt in XP.

About 5 seconds on a backup pc which is a 1.4GHz amd

That should set you straight. There is also a reg. tweak of decreasing boot times but I haven't used it.

Got it on a p2 laptop, 4 seconds it shows the logo, but someohow on a 3 ghz laptop it takes like fucking 20 seconds

It might also be the prefetcher cache (which loads bits of frequent apps) during bootup. Not sure if it does this AFTER the xp logo or during it. But there is a way to clear the prefetcher, don't remember how though.

A little tip on usage:

BootVis is a free tool that examines your system boot process in order to optimize the prefetch parameters. It can drastically speed up the boot process.

After installing and starting BootVis select 'Next Boot + Driver Delays' from the 'Trace' menu.

When the Desktop shows up please do not touch anything, BootVis will start up automatically after the examination has completed!

Now it's time to let BootVis optimize your system.

Select 'Optimize System' from the 'Trace' menu.

The next reboot will take considerably longer than usual!

When your Desktop shows up BootVis is still optimizing, please wait until the BootVis splash screen goes away. From now on, your computer will boot considerably faster. You should repeat this optimization process every 2 months.

XP still asks you to do it :icon6:

On some updates it asks to reboot...but not all.

My logo comes up in about 10 seconds...but I couldn't care less how long it takes. I'm not in THAT much of a hurry.

NT took so long I always managed to have time for a toss in the corner of the basement.

rarely.. and even then the apps normally work without rebooting..


and from power on, minus having to pick which os for dualboot, it takes 25 seconds for fedora and 15 or so for xp pro..

How bout this:

Navigate to the key with regedit.

Its already set at Y

Amd 64 3200+, 1024megs kingston, 200gig SATA, 11 seconds.. power button to desktop.

7-8 seconds.

I don't count from cold boot, cuz I got an extra IDE controller wich slows up the boot, but the Windows XP progress bar goes arround for 6 times. It was 2 times at a clean install.

start run msconfig enter

The startup apps in msconfig are different than the prefetcher But since that is a GOOD idea to disable usueless shit that's not needed, maybe odium can check that out and remove some apps if he has a TON of them in there.

Usually the bar thingy goes by five or six times on this machine.
