.. thinking of a Golf.
Nothing fancy or expensive.

I got two choices..

Golf GT 1.8 1989 with 90 hp.
Full service book and only service on VW shop.
Import from Germany with 2 owners since -89

Blue metallic with no rust.
Sport seats, sport steering wheel, 15" rims, sun roof/hatchet, JVC cd stereo and route computer(no idea what it's called in english..a digital display showing distance, how much gas left etc)

Price: 1,732 US, 1,415 Euro and 947 UK but i can go down around 400 US dollars.
It's longdsitance driving on it.. with 280.000 Kilometers

Then i have this choice:

Golf GTI 1.8 1987with 140 hp
No service book and probably hillbilly fixes on it.
No import... no idea how many owners.

Black color with rust stains.
Sport seats, sport steering wheel, regular 14" rims, sun roof/hatchet,route computer, but no stereo.
Price: US 1,332, Euro 1,088 and 728 UK... i can knock off around 250-300 US dollars on it though.
Around the same distance driven.. 280.000 kilometers.

So, should i go for the cheaper one with more horsepower but bad paint, no cd stereo, no nice rims... or should i add a few extra dollars and get the one with full service book, few owners, nice rims, cd stereo etc...?

I will just use it as it is... so style and shit dosent really matter, its around 400 dollars difference

Feom my experiances VWs are crap after 30,000 miles. 5 VWs 5 electrical, exhaust, and interior leakage problems. IMO they are great as a 2 year lease, not good to own.

30.000 miles is NOTHING... did you see that i wrote kilometers?
.. 280.000kilometers is around 173.992 miles.

And im used to fixing cars and i have a friend that owns a car shop.. and i dident expect to not having to fix the car now and then for a price like that.

To "girly".. its a nice car, but nothing for me.
If i want a small car.. i want something with a little power under the hood and that looks ok.

Maybe also depends on how long you want to keep the car and on the fuel prices over there in sweden. The GTI will surely be fun to drive but thirstier....

Why not grab the nicer one with the smaller engine and run it for a bit, you would always grab a bigger engine if the 90HP isn't enough, obviously not a cheap option, but you'd be spending money sorting out the paint, rims etc on the other one, right?

So?
I've had porsche, bmw, saab, alfa romeo, audi, mercedes.. here in sweden it's not all about the car.. you been watching to much The fast and the furious.
I could go out and buy a Porsche carrera 2 for around 33,300 US dollars tomorrow if i wanted to look kewl... but then i wouldent afford to buy stuff to my apartment like big screen tv, new graphic card, oak dining table etc...

So i will satisfy with an OLD VW....

I've been thinking like that aswell mikors... its not the money that worries me though, its more about the horsepower and the distance driven...
I want power under the hood.. the look aint all that.

no I'm saying they run OK untill about 30,000 miles after that things randomly stop working and they are usually critical things.

Headlights dead $300.00
Central harness (windows interior lights A/c) $950.00)
Cat clogged (warrantee) $225 for flatbed no AAA
etc

Sorry just cannot stand VWs anymore to many headaches
