It's disturbing to know that these people have influence in government.

"By a series of recent initiatives, Republicans have transformed our party into the political arm of conservative Christians. The elements of this transformation have included advocacy of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, opposition to stem cell research involving both frozen embryos and human cells in petri dishes, and the extraordinary effort to keep Terri Schiavo hooked up to a feeding tube. Standing alone, each of these initiatives has its advocates, within the Republican Party and beyond. But the distinct elements do not stand alone. Rather they are parts of a larger package, an agenda of positions common to conservative Christians and the dominant wing of the Republican Party. ... As a senator, I worried every day about the size of the federal deficit. I did not spend a single minute worrying about the effect of gays on the institution of marriage. Today it seems to be the other way around."
-John Darforth, former US representative at the UN, former episcopalian minister

I don't know about anyone else here but I felt a surge of total loathing welling up in me reading all that shit. American Taliban is right, only unlike the Taliban these guys have influence on the guys in power with the nukes and the $420bn military budget.

"AIDS is a racial disease of Jews and Niggers, and fortunately it is wiping out the queers. I guess God hates queers for several reasons. There is one big reason to be against queers and that is because every time some white boy is seduced by a queer into becoming a queer, means his white bloodline has run out."

I think that Rush Limbaugh quote is accurate:
"There is only one way to get rid of nuclear weapons... use them"
It's like the wake up call offered up at the end of Sum of All Fears. People today either don't have any conception of the power of nuclear weapons or don't want to know.

Dave, what on earth are you saying there?
That the only way to get rid of a nuclear weapon is to use it? (this is of course provably false)
Or are you making some sort of remark about how the majority of the people doesn't know how powerful a nuke is? (no shit, how many people you know have seen a nuke explode - and how the hell does that justify using them in order to get rid of them?)
What the fuck?

You're misunderstanding me.. I didn't say use all of them. I say an accident or something needs to happen before people realize they need to be gotten rid of because people are ignorant or don't want to confront the realities.... just like I posted before

You mean like an accident would have to happen in every nuclear country?
Because Hiroshima and Nagasaki certainly didn't deter anybody from pursuing them.

We could run around in circles all day talking about why I think a catastrophic accident is the only way to end nuclear proliferation, so it's not really worth discussing. As far as people pursuing them further, that came during the Cold War when nothing was off-limits militarily.
The only time we actually saw the human effects of nuclear weapons was at the end of WWII. Nukes today are far more destructive, yet people really can't comprehend what that means.

And yes, I know we are technically still pursuing them, but no new nuclear weapons.. mean no new nuclear material are being produced... Current development is in the category of "stockpile stewardship"

I was just wanting some clarification, not trying to start a debate or an argument.
I mean I would agree with you that, until people see what nuclear destruction really looks like, they won't be as fearful of it as they should.
If you're saying "a nuclear accident would be the most horrible thing that could happen right now, but unfortunately we're going to be on hair-trigger alert until it does," then I guess I do agree with you.
It just sounded at first like you were advocating a nuclear disaster somewhere, in order to 'get things rolling' or something.
