I use a whole bunch of fonts from OS9 - don't understand your prob...

... ahh - here's the reason for your woes; QE on OSX is ... (let me be nice here) ... not working that well. In fact InDesign is much better at opening old QE files. And handle OS9 fonts. I'm not saying that every OS9 font I got work, but those causing problems are mostly odd shareware ones.

Huh? I had pretty large collection of fonts (started back in OS 7 days) when I moved over to OSX Jaguar - a few of them will not open in Font Book, and most of those were behaving badly in OS9 as well. The rest just works fine for me, no conversion or anything - Font Book just installs them for me and I use them as before. I tested right now - no problems opening either a old postscript font by loading it's bitmap file (.bmap) or a jokefont I made myself long ago in Fontographer and saved as a TrueType. All this in 10.3.8.
cheers

Many commercial fonts are available on one or more of those free font sites, you'd just have to look.
