Once, briefly, many years ago. All I remember is the liquid sunshine, wandering into restricted military personnel housing without realising, and some rude Hawaiian women asking me "what you want?" when I went to a store to get some Dr Pepper. All that grass skirts, ukeleles and aloha crap seemed to be for Jap tourists. I hadn't slept for 30 hours or something so it was all kind of a blur.

It's all tourist shit unless you go to the smaller islands. Check out to volcanic areas

The locals don't like mainlander's (howlies) moving there, they will make a stink.
There isn't enough jobs to go around and when main landers move to the islands to "Live in Paradise" they get upset.
Just a word of warning.

I've been to Ohahu.
Nice weather (85 F year round), the most incredible waves (North Shore- Dec-Jan) you've ever seen, longest 1 mph moving traffic jam you'll ever sit thru
i.e. from Pearl Harbor to Diamond Head (Honolulu), most expensive prices you'll ever pay for a Happy Meal (lolleroo), and everything else...yeah...fun place to visit, but I wouldnt wanna live there.

Oahu is the most populated Island and the most popular when it comes to tourists. The Japanese think they own the island the way they act, just give them room they will leave you alone.
Maui is the best Island for Tourists. Not as Popular as Oahu.
The "Big" Island "Hawaii" is really the best vacation spot, none of the Islands are good for living though.
If you really want to live on an Island then move to Oahu, You may blend in because there are soooooooo many damn people living there already.
Also you may have to take in to consideration of what the call Rock fever.
This is a well known disease that will make you go nuts. You finally realize that you have no place to go and hide.

I've heard that here's so many Asiatic people there, blonde people kind of get the cold shoulder.
It's also really expensive.

to answer you question, yes twice.
my father's side has 3 generations born in Honolulu. since i've only been there but haven't really contemplated living there (i'm quite comfortable where i'm at) i don't know if i would be a help or not. on the other hand, i have a cousin who has a business on the big island , Maui, and Oahu, he'd be a good person to ask. i'll try and get a hold of him tomorrow if you're still seeking some info.

i am. been looking at housing and getting a lil depresed. I still have hope i can do this cause the housing was like north shore and shit. I just need to find a area that has tolerable housing situation and a good enough job situation. I dont mind a non standard job, i can work at parasailing places or do some touristy thing or dig ditches or do pretty much anything that will make me money, but online i have found apts like 1000 a month for a 325 sqft apt with coin operated washer and dryer.
Thats a lil much lol.

I've heard economy and jobs is a real problem in hawaii. I book a lot of tourists there though.
