Saw this in the daily bulletin at work the other day (an announcement read to students).
"Native American students, and students of color, will be offered free summer school. See the office for tuition waiver forms."
I about choked when I read it - mainly because most of the students I have who fall into the category of needing help to pay for things like this are white.
I believe there was some outrage initially, that forced the district to backtrack and offer free summer school tuition for everyone (funny, since they are cutting all the programs for high achieving students due to 'budget constraints.') Prime example of GWB's NCLB effects - schools are sooo concerned about meeting the yearly progress standards set by NCLB (which are basically nothing more than getting more and more students to pass a standardized test) that the resources for students who actually give a damn about their education are being reduced so we can spend most of our time and money on kids who do absolutely nothing. I haven't had a student fail who did not consciously choose to do so. Social welfare is getting out of control and finding its way into the educational system. Oh well.
(By the way, we are a very diverse school - so it is not like this was a gesture by a predominantly white community to 'reach out' to the minorities...I really have no idea what the logic behind it was.)

isn't the real problem a woefully underfunded education system?

The kids in school here spend quite a bit of the year just working toward passing those tests instead of actually learning anything. It's like they don't want the kids to be distracted by anything but the test so the school can make a good showing. Pisses me off.

So this is where the British government obsession with meeting arbitrary and meaningless targets came from.
Just stop exporting this stuff please. Pretty please with mom, Doris Day and apple pie on top.

They should have done it on the basis of financial need, not just color. That would have been more effective and reached the people tha t really needed it.

A big part of the problem, yes. Overcrowded schools, increasing student to teacher ratios, and no money to do much about it...
The counter to that, an argument I hear a lot, is that you can't fix a problem by just throwing money at it. True, but the issue is a bit more complicated than just 'throwing money.'

perhaps this sort of affirmative action should be centered around criteria of socio-economic status rather than ethnicity.
That way, if you're poor, you get a helping hand, regardless of your skin colour.

Yes but the real issue at the heart of it is equity...(i.e. equal distribution of educational opportunity and resources). Until that changes, the obsession with national standards is just another rhetorical masking of The Haves vs. The Have-nots. It's quite pathetic.

that offends me plenty.
people should be striving for equality, not ensuring that a particular race has a good deal.
