Recreational marijuana use could be legal in Canada by 1 July 2018 under coming legislation, according to reports.
The federal government will table legislation to legalise marijuana by April, public broadcaster CBC is reporting.
Sources told the CBC that members of the governing Liberal party were recently briefed on the timeline.
The party has long promised they would have legislation ready by spring.
I would love the UK to do this; the amount of money it would make in taxes on the stuff never mind the savings on police time wasted chasing growers would be pretty phenomenal.
Ottawa says legal pot under a new strict regulation regime will make it easier to keep it away from young people, to pull profits from organised crime, to reduce the burden on police and the justice system, and to improve public health.
Dutchees - does your government tell you how much money is made from weed tax in your country?

Makes complete sense to me so it has to eventually happen.

I'm dissapointed it's not legalized for this summer tbh. I'd like to start growing a few plants on my property. I have a baby barn in my back yard that would be fun to turn into a mini greenhouse.

Ah well, none, actually.
Weed is in fact illegal here in the Netherlands and a government can't tax anything that is illegal.
It's just that the Dutch government has tolerated recreational softdrugs use since the 70's or so, which is what created the image of Amsterdam as a city where everyone is smoking joints in public all the time.
Thing is, as progressive as the Netherlands was, we are being overtaken left and right by various different countries and American states. It greatly saddens me that Dutch governments aren't more willing to legalize soft drugs, but I suspect pressure from other EU nations and the EU itself is a big factor in this.

strictly speaking, no.
This is because the Dutch Ministry of Justice applies a gedoogbeleid (tolerance policy) with regard to the category of soft drugs: an official set of guidelines telling public prosecutors under which circumstances offenders should not be prosecuted. This is a more official version of a common practice in other European countries wherein law enforcement sets priorities regarding offenses on which it is important enough to spend limited resources.
According to current gedoogbeleid the possession of a maximum amount of five grams cannabis for personal use is not prosecuted. Cultivation is treated in a similar way. Cultivation of 5 plants or less is usually not prosecuted when they are renounced by the cultivator.[10]

That sounds like a great name for a strain.
"What are you smoking?"
"Some high quality hydroponic Sharia Creep, it really sneaks up on you."
Or maybe call it Jihadi Jane, potent enough to blow your mind.
