As I understand it, the process isn't very efficient or cost effective, and as a result most of our electonic recycling goes to landfills or third world countries.

Most of that shit ends up in giant electronic graveyards in Africa, where parts are picked through by kids and melted down for scrap. Planned obsolescence, at its finest:

Ever thought how an archaeologists in the distant future will be sifting through our landfill sites and wonder what sort of world we lived in? Half a society living in a planned obsolescence world of consumerism where we are compelled to consume and the other half scratching for crumbs, while starving to death

Heh... you think we have a future. Cute.
Think about this, there's billions upon billions of solar systems out there and no signs of intelligent life. Some systems, like ours, are much farther along in terms of how long they've existed in comparison to earth yet no signs of life. Something is killing sentient life before it's able to leave the planets they start from and populate other areas of space. Whether it's self destruction or some cosmic event that wipes us out chances are there will be no future archaeologists.

One way to look at the future I suppose. Me, I dream a different world in 500 years.
When I was thinking archaeologists in the distant future I was thinking thousands of years much archaeologists today in Egypt.
