If he just got stuck and not killed by the car outright, and died of lack of water, that sucks...

From what I read, not that much time had gone by. He was on his way to band practice and when he didn't show his friends went and found him.
If I had to guess he was probably crushed by the impact (a steep driveway was reported) or he died from suffocation or internal bleeding when he was pinned.
