Lets pretend I don't own a GTI. This GTI, I don't own, was having some major electrical issues. Like the blower motor stopped working, the windshield washer nozzles stopped working, the rear wiper stopped working and the cig lighter all stopped working, all at the same time. I imagine that some fuses might have blown if I owned that car.

After extensively not checking those fuses, I also didn't order a resistor which can be replaced under the passenger glove compartment and I also didn't remove the blower motor to refurbish it so it'd run better. After not re-installing these imaginary parts I didn't test it, but if I had I would have found it didn't fix the problem.

Digging deeper into the issue I didn't discover that a power relay under the driving steering wheels totally doesn't supply power to fuses 40, 41 and 42 which coincidentally don't control the windshield washer nozzles, rear wiper, cig lighter and the blower motor and I didn't get a quote from the mechanic who wanted 800$ to repair the issue, cause I don't own a GTI.

I suspected if I had a GTI, replacing all these parts seemed a bit fishy since they all went at the same time to my knowledge. Instead I ordered a 20$ relay and I definitely didn't have to dismantle the entire driver side dash board under the steering wheel to access this relay which doesn't exist... cause I don't have a GTI. It also didn't take me roughly 1 hour of fiddling around and breaking a few bits of plastic in the process to access this extremely difficult to get to spot and installing the new relay.

If I had a GTI, I reckon I'd have been super happy that everything started working like a charm once the new relay was installed.


Sorry... I had to share, no one else to tell, cause you know, I don't own the car and I haven't been driving around with no heat for the last 2 weeks stressing out about fixing it.

I definitely don't. Just super happy my research and work paid off. After replacing the resistor I thought that the issue would be fixed and running into that setback made finding the solution all that much sweeter.

There's nothing unusual about electrical problems in cheap German cars produced in Mexico.

Rear wiper in locked position? I had a jeep with the same problem caused by the wiper motor draining batteries cause it wasn't fully at it's default position.

Have you got a multimeter? You can pick-up a cheap one for ~£5 off Amazon if you don't. Once you have one Google parasitic battery drain - https://www.batterystuff.com/kb/article ... -load.html

Basically you stick the multimeter on DC amps and put it in-between the battery and the car. (e.g., battery lead => multimeter => battery terminal) then keep pulling fuses out until you find which one causes a significant drop. That's probably your problem bit of equipment. Don't start the car as it'll blow the multimeter.

I had to do this on a friends car a few weeks ago, turned out it was a dodgy aftermarket alarm someone had fitted to her car

Are you sure it's being drained? Maybe the alternator is not charging correctly.

BTW, have you tried fixing it?

^ You can also use said multimeter to test if it's charging correctly. Stick it on 20V DC mode and read across positive and negative. When the car's off it should read ~12v. When it's running it should read ~14.4v.

You may just need a new battery. Bosch S4's are very good. http://www.eurocarparts.com / http://www.carparts4less.co.uk (same company) are often the cheapest; ECP has 20% off at the moment, check their homepage for the code .

Got a new batery - a bosch with 700 CCA too

Pho - 14 coming through on the alternator. Might just take it to an auto electrician as I neither have the technica ability of the wantoness to fix it myself

If the car's still draining the new battery try the fuse pulling trick to see if you can narrow it down. ~14v sounds about right when charging, I guess different cars put out different amounts

Might even be something silly like the light in your boot never going out or something .

Oh,and Κracus mk5's are known for that relay... It's reletivly common... Yours didn't fail entirely else you'd get nothing when you flicked the key on.

Fixed a few of those to date, two specifically had no interior power to them and where unable to start due to the cluster not being able to report the anti-theft status ( immo )

14v is a good charging voltage. You may have had a bad battery. But if your car is still draining the battery you're going to have to do the fuse box trick suggested previously. Whenever a car is having issues with charging or staying charged it's usually #1 Bad battery, #2 Bad Alternator or #3 Ghost power consumption, in that order. If you don't continue to have problems I would bet you've fixed it.
