Going there on holiday this year, it has been decided

I seem to recall at least one person here went a few years ago (was it Obs?); any tips on things to see / do / not do?

Burma?

The food is shit. The buddhist temples are amazing. Don't expect much; it's supposed to have gotten quite a lot more touristy since the Junta pretended to go out of power.

The only thing they eat is this fish-paste noodle dish. If you're there just a few days it probably won't get too bad. But for me, I'm huge on food anywhere I travel.

Are there any major travel alerts in Burma these days? I've never been, actually. There were some major political instability when I was in the area a few years ago. Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from house arrest and looks like today, the country has elected it's first civilian president in decades. Hopefully this ensures peace in the country.

On my last trip to Asia, I went to Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Cambodia.

Up north it's fucked. There is a war of reprisals between the ethnic bangladeshi muslims and the Buddhist burmese. Mass slaughter, decapitations, that kind of thing. The military has the area under lockdown but it's still possible to get in if you grease the wheels. No real reason to go unless you're a reporter, though.

Hmm, kind of doubting this plan now. Also because tickets seem to be enormously expensive for some reason. Might be a better plan to head to Thailand (where i know the food is good) and just hop across the border for a bit.
