People are not exchanging the good old fashioned Christmas card, child care centres are outlawing Santa Claus because of political/religious/racial correctness and I am getting a number of e greetings from friends.

It is getting to the point you dare not risk saying Merry Christmas for fear of offence or retaliation.

Despite what the news cycle tells you, nobody will flip out on you for saying Merry Christmas.

There's a moderate shit storm (okay, shit drip) going on here in NL over a promo from a public, government payed TV channel wishing everyone a merry Christmas but it shows only white people so, yeah, that's a problem, innit? In fact, it does show a woman who originally is from Suriname, but that doesn't count because in the shot used, she's filmed from behind.

Well, if this is the sort of thing people get riled up over these days, then I can only be grateful we don't have any serious issues to get riled up over instead.

People weren't specifically hired for the promo. It is a collage of fragments from popular TV programs. If those feature mainly white people, then it's not the promo's fault. It's not odd that a country with a predominantly white population has more white than non-white people in the media.

Also, it's about how it is spun. The promo does feature non-white people, but they're in the background or filmed from behind, so the PC crowd just dismisses those people as not being portrayed significantly enough.

I mean seriously, if you let yourself get wound up over a 1 minute Xmas promo like this, your life must be really, really bitter.

People get 'wound up' about this stuff because it's indicative of larger problems.

Also I think you might be a bit biased and don't realize it. (See the whole Zwarte Piet thing. Blackface is not okay bro.)

Don't drag Zwarte Piet into this. That is a trainwreck of a discussion that's mostly held by people who are not interested in finding a mutual agreement but are more invested in calling the other party 'morons'. Your blackface comment shows me pretty well how poorly you understand this thing.

Back on subject though, you're right that there are most likely bigger issues that ask for our attention, but that's kind of my point. Rather than getting angry over some well intentioned Christmas promo (that's pretty well representative of the current media landscape here, as well as the Dutch population), give thought to the reasons of why there are very few high profile programs presented or hosted by non-white people. A shot at this promo is wasted effort. It polarizes the discussion, detracts from the bigger underlying issues and only forces the TV station into a situation where, sure, next year there will be non-white people in the promo but only as a way to prevent another backlash. Meanwhile, those non-white people probably still don't host any big prime time TV shows.
