Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast are both pretty good, Avast being the better of the two. But for the most part it's about common sense.

Or pay $40 for ESET, which is probably one of the best you can get: http://www.eset.com/us/home/products/antivirus/.

Avast is light and effective. Are you planning a trip to the internet porn library?

Not sure if serious... proxies wouldn't protect you from a virus, unless maybe its function was solely network-based action.

Hey Lars, I know I don't have the best reputation around but when it comes to fixing computers I'm by definition an expert and ESET is a great choice. If you don't want to pay for it just load up this site and run the online scanner http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

It works great and I'd recommend it. Just click the run online scanner button and go through the prompts. At one point it may look like it failed, just click retry/continue and it should go through and do the scan. The online scan has to be done manually, IE it won't keep you protected unless you pay for it but if you know the link to the free scanner just pop it in if you think you're infected and eset will catch most malware/viruses.

If that's still not getting the job done and you're somewhat tech savvy you could always try downloading process explorer to try and pin down the virus and eliminate it manually but I'll warn you in advance, it's not easy to figure out but it's an incredibly awesome tool if you do. In fact any of the sysinternal software is great in troubleshooting pc's/laptops in general.

None planned Captain, only places I go are here, Gmail, Drudgereport and that's about all my travels on the Internet Hiway. This new Laptop has a trail copy of McAfee on it and when it runs out I don't want to pay for it or any other antivirus program because I'm cheap. I will check out the links and thank you all :)

ESET business tech support are also very good. They were chasing me to help try and resolve a problem we were having rather then me having to chase them .
